International Exchange American Arts IncubatorAmerican Arts Incubator is an initiative of the U.S. Department of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) developed in partnership with ZERO1. Through AAI, U.S. artists collaborate with communities abroad during a month-long incubator. These creative collaborations transfer skills in art, technology, and entrepreneurship. Through digital and new media art workshops, they facilitate dialogue and explorations of the social challenge. There is a focus on selecting participants who identify as youth, women, people with disabilities, and underserved populations. AAI provides small grants to participants to prototype creative projects applying workshop skills to the challenge. Each exchange culminates in an open house that showcases the prototypes and solicits public feedback.Due to the onset of COVID-19, five of our incubators were transitioned to fully virtual engagements. American Arts Incubator engaged a total of 866 participants, including 105 workshop participants plus attendees to public events, such as artist presentations, artist-led community conversations, panel reviews, and final exhibitions of program outputs.Arts Education Storytelling with Augmented RealityIn this pilot six-week virtual workshop, students learned how to use Augmented Reality (AR) to tell powerful stories about local issues that matter to them. Students focused on storytelling and developed their explorations into interactive digital experiences using Augmented Reality. They learned storyboarding, design methodologies, and interaction design techniques using authoring tools such as Spark AR and Adobe Aero. Students developed useful life skills, such as critical thinking, communication of ideas, problem solving, and leadership. The workshop culminated in a final virtual showcase of project prototypes where students gathered feedback for their creative expressions. The workshop was taught by a local artist and educator via Zoom due to COVID-19. The outreach process was also interrupted by the pandemic, and thus we had two engaged students, with one completing the workshop series.Public Art TransgenesisTransgenesis is an outdoor multimedia performance that brings together artists based in the Bay Area, and QTPOC arts communities as collaborators to collectively re-imagine our relationship to the environment, our bodies, and health. This project was originally intended to be site-specific in nature. The initial plan was to explore the transformation of toxic environments through durational performances and mixed media installation works that reveal present and future narratives of symbiosis, bioremediation, and healing at Herons Head Park and the historic site of the former Hunters Point PG&E Power Plant, which for many years was powered by the burning of coal and fossil fuels, causing a large amount of pollution in the area. However, due to COVID-19 the project was postponed and transformed into a short film, touching on the same themes outlined above. Project research and development continued through the end of the fiscal year with a public release of the film postponed until the following fiscal year.International Exchange ArtsLinkZERO1 served as a host organization for the ArtsLink International Fellowship, which offers artists and arts managers/curators from eligible overseas countries a six-week residency at an established, non-profit arts organization in the U.S. The program is designed to create opportunities for artists and communities across the U.S. to share artistic practices with creative practitioners from abroad and engage in dialogue that advances understanding across cultures.Partner Program Matchbox LabsMatchbox is an art+tech interactive lab series, hosted at CounterPulse in partnership with ZERO1 & Kinetech Arts, that seeds collaboration beyond disciplines.Designed as public practicum labs that are open to the public, Matchbox pairs creative technologists with dancers and choreographers to spark critical investigations and seed cutting-edge works.Matchbox creates an opportunity for these two creative communities to find places of overlapping values, and serves as a framework for a more collaborative urban arts ecology.
