Organizations Filed Purposes:
MACLA/Movimiento de Arte y Cultura Latino Americana is an inclusive contemporary arts space grounded in the Chicano/Latino experience that incubates a new visual literary and performance art in order to engage people in civic dialogue and community transformation.
Each year the Organization produces approximately 50 programs in three core program tracts: visual arts, performance and literary arts, and youth arts education.The Organization offers four major visual art exhibitions each year that showcase artists whose work reflects a Latino aesthetic and history but is inclusive of a broader multicultural sensibility. Exhibitions are free to the public. They include artist talks, gallery walks and lectures that expand upon the themes and issues addressed and place artists within their artistic and cultural contexts. From hip-hop and spoken word to music and dance, the Organization offers performance and literary arts that provides new perspectives on contemporary Latino culture and civic society. The Organization uses Castellano Playhouse, the leading downtown venue, for the presentation of Latino and other ethnic artists and performing arts groups. The Organization commissions one major new performance work every year and, as members of the National Performance Network, offers two artist residencies annually and present national touring professionals. The Organization is an active participation in South First Fridays. Each month the Organization offers a participatory performance where audience members watch performers and join them in learning a new dance move. The Organizations performers represent the best of the Latino diaspora in the Bay Area.The Organizations Digital Media and Culture (DMC) studio provides a comprehensive arts education dedicated to mentoring at-risk, urban Latino youth, ages 13-18, in 21st century skill development through multimedia production. DMC studio offers free after-school and summer sessions during which teens design and complete projects then showcased through music video screenings, dance/music performances, poetry slams or gallery exhibitions. The year-round curriculum, taught by experienced industry professionals who serve as media mentors in our state-of-the-art studio environment, includes videography, music engineering, slam poetry and digital photography. The Organizations annual Family Art Day features theme-based activities specifically designed to engage parents and their children, enhance their understanding of exhibitions through hands-on experiences in the arts, and build future audiences for contemporary Latino art.
