Organizations Filed Purposes: THE MISSION OF THE SAN JOSE MUSEUM OF QUILTS & TEXTILES IS TO PROMOTE AND CELEBRATE THE ART, CREATORS, CRAFT AND HISTORY OF QUILTS AND TEXTILES.

DURING THE FISCAL YEAR 2018 MUSEUM MOUNTED APPROXIMATELY 15 ROTATING EXHIBITIONS THAT SERVED AS A VEHICLE FOR CREATING CONVERSATION ABOUT SOCIAL ISSUES AND FIBER ART WHILE PROMOTING THE VALUE OF FIBER ART, QUILTS AND TEXTILES. EXHIBITIONS IN 2018-2019 INCLUDED:THE ART OF LABOR: SURFACE DESIGN ASSOCIATION'S JURIED MEMBERS EXHIBITION; CUT IT OUT: EXPLORATIONS IN CONTEMPORARY PAPER CUTTING; VANTAGE POINT" MAGGY ROZYCKI HILTNER; FRAU FIBER VS. THE MACHINES; HONORING THE HEROINES OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT: PATRICIA MONTGOMERY; EXCELLENCE IN FIBERS: IN COLLABORATION WITH FIBER ART NOW; EMPTY VOID: JAYOUNG YOON; HEY ARE YOU FREE?: WU JU JUNG; INTERNATIONAL TECHSTYLE ART BIENNIAL IV; JUDITH CONTENT: SOLO EXHIBITION; H2OH!; THE MARBAUM COLLECTION: VARIATIONS IN TECHNIQUES; KRISTEN MARTINIC: BATHING SUITS.THE MUSEUM CONTINUES TO PRESENT AN OFF-SITE EXHIBITION AT PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL QUILT FESTIVAL, A QUILT FESTIVAL AT THESANTA CLARA CONVENTION CENTER THAT DRAWS OVER 6,000 NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL QUILT MAKERS. TOTAL MUSEUM ATTENDANCE FOR THIS YEAR WAS APPROXIMATELY 10,000, INCLUDING PAID AND UNPAID ATTENDANCE, FREE FIRSTFRIDAYS, COMMUNITY DAYS, TOURS AND RECEPTIONS. MUSEUM EXPOSURE IN THE COMMUNITY MORE THAN DOUBLED WHEN FACTORING THE OUTREACH PRESENTATIONS AT THE CONVENTIONS CENTERS. EXHIBITIONS ARE PLANNED BY THE MUSEUM'S EXHIBITION COMMITTEE WHICH CONSISTS OF KEY VOLUNTEERS, ARTISTS AND STAFF. THE EXHIBITS COMMITTEE MEETS QUARTERLY TO REVIEW SUBMISSIONS FROM ARTISTS, COLLECTORS AND THE COMMUNITY TO PLAN A MISSION-DRIVEN SCHEDULE OF ARTISTICALLY AMBITIOUS SHOWS AND PROGRAMS THAT REFLECTS THE ORGANIZATION'S STRATEGIC AND ARTISTIC GOALS. PROGRAMS ALSO HAVE TO MEET BUDGET AND RESOURCE ALLOCATIONS. THE MUSEUM LAUNCHED AN ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM IN OCTOBER 2016.

THROUGH THE MUSEUM'S SCHOOL TOUR PROGRAM OVER 400 STUDENTS VISITED THE MUSEUM DURING THE FISCAL YEAR. CHILDREN ARE PROVIDED WITH AN HOUR AND HALF LONG DOCENT LEAD TOUR, DRAWING SESSION IN THE GALLERY AND THEN AN EXHIBITION RELATED PROJECT. THE MUSEUM CONTINUES ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH NEXT DOOR TO DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND THE SANTA CLARA VALLEY QUILT ASSOCIATION (SCVQA) TO JOINTLY PROVIDE THE QUILTS AS WOMEN'S SHELTER PROGRAM. IN COLLABORATION WITH THE SAN JOSE POLICE DEPARTMENT AND FOUNDATION, THE MAYOR'S OFFICE, AND IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE EXHIBITION GUNS: LOADED CONVERSATIONS, THE MUSEUM DEVELOPED THE INITIATIVE CASH + QUILTS FOR GUNS. THE MUSEUM COLLECTED 140 NEW QUILTS FROM LOCAL QUILT MAKERS AND RAISED ALMOST $15,000 TO SUPPORT A DECEMBER 1, 2018 SJPD GUN BUY-BACK. THE MUSEUM HAD A TENT/BOOTH AT THE BUY BACK IN DECEMBER AND HANDED OUT QUILTS.

THE PERMANENT COLLECTION OF THE SAN JOSE MUSEUM OF QUILTS & TEXTILES CONTAINS OVER 1000 TEXTILES AND INCLUDES HISTORIC QUILTS, CONTEMPORARY ART QUILTS AND TEXTILE-BASED ART FORMS, AS WELL AS GARMENTS AND TEXTILES FROM WORLD CULTURES. IT ALSO FEATURES A LIBRARY WITH OVER 700 VOLUMES. A KEY OBJECTIVE OF THE COLLECTION IS TO RECOGNIZE AND PROMOTE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CENTRAL ROLE PLAYED BY BAY AREA ARTISTS IN THE QUILTING AND FIBER ARTS REVIVAL DURING THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY - A MOVEMENT THAT CONTINUES TODAY. IN ADDITION, THE MUSEUM RECEIVED 24 WORKS BY THE LATE ARTIST JONATHAN SHANNON, INCLUDING ONE QUILT SELECTED AS ONEOF 100 BEST QUILTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY. INCLUDED IN THIS GIFT ARE TEN ART QUILTS BY OTHER ARTISTS.
