Organizations Filed Purposes:
Valley Verde is dedicated to building healthy and resilient communities in Santa Clara Valley by providing low-income families educational programs, edible organic gardens, and micro-entrepreneurship opportunities that create food security and lead to self-sufficiency.
Valley Verde assists Silicon Valleys low-income residents in growing organic vegetables in their own yards. ITS mission is to promote the widespread cultivation of organic home vegetable gardens, in order to encourage healthier eating and address food insecurity in Santa Clara Valley.
Home Gardening: Valley Verde provides low-income families with raised-bed gardens at home, along with the supplies needed to grow fresh vegetables; such as soil, compost, irrigation systems, and seedlings. Families attend a full year of monthly workshops where they learn about best practices in organic urban agriculture. We also share ideas for healthy, affordable and delicious meals. In addition to building skills, workshops are an opportunity to build a stronger sense of community with other families. After the first year, many Home Gardening alumni stay involved by picking up free seedlings each season for their home gardens and continuing to receive technical advice from the Valley Verde community. In 2019, the Home Garden Program provided 120, 90-minute monthly workshops for 139 families (391 household members) to learn about nutrition, healthy cooking, and organic urban gardening techniques. Deep Roots: After a year of participation in the Home Gardening program, participants are eligible to become mentors through the Deep Roots program. Mentors are trained to provide one-to-one coaching for new participants in the Home Gardening program. Each Deep Roots mentor works with 3-4 Home Gardening families per month to provide advice, support, and problem-solving. Valley Verde facilitated 219 in-home garden visits through mentors and Valley Verde staff, to provide the families information on organic gardening and problem solving techniques for their garden, such as pest control, and troubleshooting. Super Jardineros: A three-year apprenticeship program for Home Gardening alumni adds entrepreneurship and job skills training as apprentices learn to grow commercial-quality organic seedlings. The seedlings are used to supply the Home Gardening program and/or are sold to the public. The seedlings that are grown reflect the cultural preferences of Santa Clara County's largest ethnic groups, i.e. Mexican, Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese, and Filipino. Valley Verde germinated 10,000 seedlings and distributed 6,316 seedlings, and donated the surplus of seedlings as follows: 300 to Gardener Elementary School, 300 to Second Street Studios, 200 to Taylor Farms, and 100 to San Jose State University. Super Jardineros germinated 1,841 seedlings and increased their income through the sales totaling ($3,684).
