Enriching Lives through Music provides youth with an immersive music education that empowers them to pursue their dreams and access resources they need to succeed in life.
After-School Program - Our after-school program is where students aged 7-18 study violin, cello, flute, clarinet, trumpet and trombone for 2-3 hours per day for 2-3 days each week from September through May. In addition to learning technical skills on their instruments, students study their primary instrument in sectionals musicianship (note reading, rhythmic and ear training). During this time, ELM students also receive homework support and tutoring help. Through participation in ELM's intensive, high-quality instrumental music education, ensemble playing, and performance opportunities, ELM students will grow as musicians and as citizens, taking pride in their accomplishments and that of their fellow performers, learn to collaborate in small and large ensembles, skills needed for success in school, college, and the workforce, gain positive self-identity through measurable accomplishments, and master problem-solving through practice, commitment, and determination, engendering confidence and creativity that scaffolds their academic efforts.
Saturday Program - ELM's largest program is our Saturday morning music program. All ELM students come for 3+ hours on Saturday from September through May to study music technique, theory and participate in an ensemble. Our program is built upon an ensemble model and our repertoire is curated by our music director and arranged so that each of our students perform at their highest level. Students rotate through three blocks including chorus, sectionals, and group ensembles or orchestras. Our orchestras form the core component of our ELM identity and we believe that they are a perfect metaphor for a positive community and nurturing good citizenship. Playing music in an ensemble is demanding and requires using multiple skills at the same time (counting, technical skills required of your instrument, attentiveness to pitch and quality and sound dynamics) all in the service of creating beautiful music. It is the ultimate experience in active and experiential learning.
Summer Camp - ELM hosts a 6-week music camp in June and July so students continue their music studies throughout the year. We also have a scholarship program to send ELM students to sleep away music camp.
