THE MOUNTAIN PLAY (MPA) SUCCESSFULLY PRODUCED THE ROCK MUSICAL GREASE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ITS HISTORY. IN THE SPRING OF 2019 MPA STAGED A SPECTACULAR PRODUCTION INFUSED WITH THE SOUND OF 50S ROCK, TEEN ANGELS AND GREASED LIGHTNING. SIXTEEN THOUSAND PLAYGOERS WERE DELIGHTED BY THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE CAR FROM JALOPY TO FANTASY HOT ROD, THE TALENT OF THE ENSEMBLE CAST, AND A SATURDAY SING-ALONG. A TEN PIECE ORCHESTRA BROUGHT THE VINTAGE ROCK SOUNDS TO LIFE WITH A CAST OF THIRTY ACTORS, TWO OF WHOM WERE UNION (AEA) PROFESSIONALS. MPA CONTINUED ITS PLANS FOR AND EXECUTION OF ITS TRAILHEAD MUSICALS SERIES OF INDOOR, OFF-THE-MOUNTAIN PRODUCTIONS. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH ROSS ALTERNATIVE WORKS & ROSS VALLEY PLAYERS, A SUCCESSFUL MUSICAL READING OF THE LOCAL, NEW WORK SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON WAS PRODUCED IN THE FALL OF 2018 AND A CO-PRODUCTION OF THE HOLIDAY CLASSIC SHE LOVES ME WAS PRESENTED IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER 2019.ALL SEVEN PERFORMANCES WERE HELD IN THE HISTORIC CUSHING MEMORIAL AMPHITHEATRE, AN OUTDOOR, GREEK-STYLE STONE THEATRE BUILT BY THE WPA AND NESTLED AT THE TOP OF MOUNT TAMALPAIS, OVERLOOKING THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY. AT EACH PERFORMANCE, LOW FEE TRANSPORTATION TO THE THEATRE FROM THREE SITES IN MILL VALLEY WAS PROVIDED FOR PATRONS IN TWENTY FIVE SCHOOL BUSES. RETURN TRANSPORTATION PROVIDE FREE BY THE MOUNTAIN PLAY. ASL INTERPRETATION WAS PROVIDED AT THREE PERFORMANCES OF GREASE AND FIVE LOCAL AGENCIES PARTICIPATED IN MPA'S "DAY ON THE MOUNTAIN" COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM, RECEIVING FREE TICKETS, ROUND TRIP TRANSPORTATION, T-SHIRTS, LUNCH, AND A GUIDED HIKE IN THE STATE PARK. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BAY AREA COMMUNITY RESOURCE, MPA PROVIDED TWO TEACHING ARTISTS FOR AFTER SCHOOL STUDENTS AT DAVIDSON MIDDLE SCHOOL, LEADING A 10-WEEK THEATRE PROGRAM USING DRAMA SKILLS TO PROVIDE YOUNG PEOPLE A SAFE SPACE TO EXPLORE, CREATE AND EXPRESS THEMSELVES.MOUNTAIN PLAY ASSOCIATION WORKS TO INTEGRATE ITS ANNUAL PROGRAMMING WITH THE WHOLE COMMUNITY, DEEPENING THE BONDS BETWEEN THE AUDIENCE AND THE ART THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS, EDUCATION, COLLABORATION, AND FUN!
