WildCares mission is to advocate for wildlife for a sustainable world, and we actively pursue this mission through nature education, wildlife medicine, advocacy and community outreach. Through partnerships with schools, collaborations with other organizations, educational programs and activities, internships and volunteer opportunities we make a positive difference in our community.
WILDCARE ADVOCATES FOR WILDLIFE AND FOR A SUSTAINABLE WORLD.
For 60 years, WildCare has been a first responder for ill, injured and orphaned wild animals, and, over the course of our history as a wildlife hospital, we have given more than 100,000 wild animals a second chance at life. WildCare is the most highly trained and experienced wildlife resource and the first responder for the Bay Area community. Annually, our Wildlife Hospital provides emergency and ongoing medical care to nearly 3,500 animals from nearly 185 distinct species that share the same habitat as humans. Over 90% OF THE WILD ANIMALS HELPED HAVE BEEN INJURED IN SOME WAY AS A RESULT OF HUMAN INTERACTION.
WildCares Terwilliger Nature Education Programs provide family nature outings, as well as school and youth programs, which connect nearly 35,000 children and adults to the Bay Areas abundant open spaces and wildlife. Our programs aim to strengthen environmental stewardship and responsibility by teaching an appreciation of nature and a respect for wildlife. Our experiential and academically supportive approach to environmental education attracts participation from more than 200 schools and community organizations from the eight Bay Area counties. Through our scholarship program, WildCare is able to provide our programs to students from disadvantaged and low-income backgrounds, so these students no longer have to miss out on nature discovery opportunities that ignite a sense of excitement about science and foster personal connections to the natural world. Free family nature outings, our robust scholarship fund and bilingual programming (Spanish/English) ensure that children and families from diverse backgrounds have equal access to environmental education. In 2016, 46% of students participating in our youth programs received a scholarship.
WildCares efforts are committed to preventing wildlife injuries and animal cruelty. Our WildCare Solutions Service and Living with Wildlife Hotline supply advice to over 10,000 callers each year on how to peacefully co-exist with their wild animal neighbors. In conjunction, we provide services for safely and humanely evicting nuisance wildlife from Bay Area residences and businesses.
