Girl Up Initiative Uganda (GUIU) aims to build a vibrant movement of girls and young women through transformative leadership, sexual and reproductive health education, and skills development. The US organization's primary purpose is to provide funding for the Ugandan organization.
In response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent school closures and national lockdown, GUIU developed a Covid-19 Response Program to best respond to the issues faced by our target group, particularly as women and girls were disproportionately affected. GUIU's response included: provision of family relief food and hygiene packages, psycho-social and emergency financial support for survivors of gender-based violence; educational dialogue sessions with adolescents on critical topics through the new Bringing Voices Together (BVT) Project; Covid-19 health awareness via community health drives, radio shows, and social media campaigns; and production and distribution of face masks. Through these response activites, GUIU reached a total of 15,177 girls, , families, and community members.
The Adolescent Girls Program (AGP) reached a total of 1,470 adolescent girls, parents, and teachers in 2020. The program empowers in-school adolescent girls to be leaders; reach their full educational potentials; and make healthy and informed choices. The AGP provides girls with the skills, knowledge, tools, mentorship, and support to develop their self-confidence and voice to thrive as leaders in their schools and communities. Program services include: year-long life skills, leadership and sexual health trainings; school scholarships; teachers' trainings; parents' meetings; advocacy events; and counseling and emergency support. Given the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent school closures, the program was temporarily suspended in March 2020 and the focus was to support girls and their families through our Covid-19 Response Program. Through the AGP, selected girls were also provided with school scholarships when schools temporarily re-opened in October for graduating classes.
Mazuri Designs Hub aims to enhance the economic empowerment of young women through a vocational training course in fashion design and tailoring that is combined with entrepreneurial and personal skills training for out-of-school vulnerable young women ages 16-35 years. During the course of the Mazuri Designs Hub, participants learn practical, personal and business skills with confidence, improve their overall wellbeing and create employment opportunities. In 2020, the program shifted from a 6 month training period to a 1 year period in response to feedback from previous participants. 35 young women graduated from the Mazuri Designs Hub in 2020.
