HIGHLIGHTS OF SANTA BARBARA CHANNELKEEPERS 2019 ACCOMPLISHMENTS INCLUDE:Reaching an interim legal settlement with the City of Ventura whereby the City will reduce or curtail its pumping of water from the Ventura River when flows diminish to critical levels to protect steelhead Compelling the City of Santa Barbara to invest $2.6 million to repair or replace 4 miles of sewer pipes, resulting in the lowest number of sanitary sewage overflows (4) in more than 20 years Secured a court-ordered moratorium on new permits for fracking, acidizing and other well stimulation techniques at oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel until potential impacts to threatened and endangered species are addressedLaunched new monitoring initiatives to measure water quality in creeks impacted by the Montecito debris flows and to assess aquatic impacts of mud dumping on Goleta Beach Conducted sampling at Rincon Beach at least once per week and shared results immediately with the public so surfers and other ocean users could avoid recreating in polluted water Partnered with Abblitts Fine Cleaners to collect approximately 14,000 pounds of film plastic from the public for recycling Trained 42 volunteers who conducted 775 surveys in Santa Barbaras coastal Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) through our MPA Watch ProgramTrained and engaged nearly 100 volunteers to collect scientific data on water quality in 24 creeks across the South Coast through our Stream Team ProgramEngaged nearly 300 volunteers to remove 525 pounds of trash from local beachesEducated 1,800 local kids about watersheds, marine science, pollution prevention and environmental stewardship
