The Santa Cruz SPCA provides safe harbor for animals in need and promotes an active humane community through adoption, advocacy, and education.
General shelter operations provide for humane care of animals while waiting for adoption. Adoption fees are collected to offset the cost of the animal's daily care, enrichment and training, spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, microchips and other medical needs. A total of 362 adoptions occurred during the fiscal year 2019-2020. As an essential business, we continued our core mission of providing safe harbor and adopting homeless animals despite the pandemic.
Second Chance Fund enables the SPCA to provide extensive veterinary and/or behavioral care for sick, injured, abused or neglected animals who would otherwise have to be euthanized.
The SPCA Humane Education programs teach compassion for all animals to children, as well as the community at large. This program assists in solving animal behavioral problems to prevent owner relinquishment, and learning to care for animals with respect. The Santa Cruz Humane Education Program also offers a summer camp for grades 1 through 8 focusing on respect, kindness and compassion when relating to animals. Children have the opportunity to meet and promote adoptable animals, learn about wildlife and much more via guest speakers, animal visitors and an engaging daily program. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Humane Education programs continued virtually.
