PAYING FOR "UP FRONT" COLLEGE COSTS, BEFORE FINANCIAL AID IS AWARDED, IS CHALLENGING FOR MOST STUDENTS WHO COME FROM LOW-INCOME HOUSEHOLDS. THIS CAN POSE A BARRIER THAT KEEPS THEM FROM APPLYING, ENROLLING, AND PERSISTING IN COLLEGE, OR FROM PARTICIPATING IN CRUCIAL ACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAMS. THE GRANT SUPPORTED COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR 40 FIRST-GENERATION LATINA COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO HAVE GRADUATED FROM THE LOS ANGELES UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO USE THE SCHOLARSHIPS TO PURCHASE BOOKS, PLACE DEPOSITS ON HOUSING, SECURE AN INTERNET CONNECTION OR PAY FOR OTHER ESSENTIALS THAT WERE CRITICAL TO THEIR ABILITY TO ENROLL IN COLLEGE AND SET THEMSELVES UP FOR SUCCESS.
YEAR 2 OF THIS THREE-YEAR GRANT SUPPORTED A SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS PROGRAM AT GIRLS ATHLETIC LEADERSHIP SCHOOL IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA FOR 35+ LATINA MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS. DURING THE 2019 ACADEMIC YEAR, STUDENTS LEARNED INTRODUCTORY COMPUTER SCIENCE AND PROGRAMMING CONCEPTS INCLUDING VARIABLES, OPERATORS AND FUNCTIONS.
