EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION.
THE GROWING PLACE (ORGANIZATION) WAS ORGANIZED IN SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA IN 1985 TO PROVIDE CHILDCARE AND EDUCATION FOR UP TO 86 CHILDREN IN THEIR OCEAN PARK FACILITY. IN SEPTEMBER 2000, THE ORGANIZATION ENTERED INTO AN AGREEMENT WITH THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA TO ACT AS ADMINISTRATOR AND OPERATOR OF THE MARINE PARK CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER, LOCATED IN SANTA MONICA. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES SERVICES FOR UP TO 137 CHILDREN (BETWEEN ITS TWO CAMPUSES) FROM INFANTHOOD TO KINDERGARTEN AGE, WITH PRIORITY GIVEN TO CHILDREN OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA EMPLOYEES AND CHILDREN OF SANTA MONICA RESIDENTS AT ITS MARINE PARK SITE. THE MAJOR SOURCES OF FUNDING FOR THE ORGANIZATION ARE STUDENTS' TUITION AND FEES, AND A CITY OF SANTA MONICA GRANT, WHICH PROVIDES FUNDING SPECIFICALLY FOR THE MARINE PARK SITE. AS WE EMBARKED ON OUR 32ND YEAR, THE BOARD WORKED TO DEVELOP A STRATEGIC PLAN FOR THE GROWING PLACE TO CREATE A PLAN THAT WILL GUIDE US THROUGH THE NEXT THREE TO FIVE YEARS AND ENSURE THAT AS WE GROW, WE KEEP WHAT WE ALL LOVE ABOUT OUR SCHOOL. THE BOARD ALSO PARTICIPATED IN WORKSHOPS AND COACHING TO BETTER SUPPORT THE ORGANIZATION. AS PART OF THIS WORK, WE HELD OUR FIRST "OPEN BOARD MEETING" TO HELP MORE MEMBERS OF THE GROWING PLACE COMMUNITY SEE WHAT WE DISCUSS AS A BOARD AND BETTER UNDERSTAND OUR ROLE AS STEWARDS OF OUR SCHOOL, AND ALSO HOSTED OUR FIRST "BREAKFAST ON THE BOARD" EVENT TO MEET MORE MEMBERS OF THE GP PARENT COMMUNITY. WE ARE ALSO VERY PROUD OF OUR RECENT RE-ACCREDITATION BY NAEYC (THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION FORTHE EDUCATION OF YOUNG CHILDREN), WHICH IS THE TOP ACCREDITING INSTITUTION FOR SCHOOLS LIKE OURS.IN AN INDUSTRY THAT TYPICALLY HAS A TEACHER RETENTION RATE AROUND 60%, THE GROWING PLACE IS PROUDTO HAVE 88% OF OUR TEACHERS RETURNING TO SCHOOL THIS YEAR, AN INDICATION THAT OUR TEACHERSLOVE OF WHAT HAPPENS IN OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY AND FEEL ENERGIZED AND SUPPORTED IN THEIR ROLE ASEDUCATORS. TO THAT END, WE MADE A SIGNIFICANT INVESTMENT IN OUR STAFF'S PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORTED THEIR PARTICIPATION IN A WEEK-LONG STUDY IN THE SCHOOLS OF REGGIO EMILIA, ITALY TO GAIN A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PEDAGOGY THAT GUIDES OUR TEACHING AND LEARNING AT GROWING PLACE. LASTLY, WE CELEBRATED A LONG-TERM DIRECTOR'S RETIREMENT AFTER 23 YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE GROWING PLACE AND WELCOMED A NEW DIRECTOR AT EACH OF OUR CAMPUSES. TO HONOR, OUR RETIRING DIRECTOR, WE RENOVATED AND DEDICATED A SMALL PORTION OF OUR PLAY-YARD WITH FRUIT-BEARING TREES FOR OUR COMMUNITY TO LEARN FROM AND ENJOY FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. OUR CHILDREN CONTINUE TO THRIVE IN OUR NURTURING ENVIRONMENT AND DEVELOP THE IMPORTANT LIFE SKILLS THAT WILL SUPPORT THEIR SUCCESS IN SCHOOL AND BEYOND.
