La Senora provides cultural heritage research and draws upon that to produce its education programs. It also supports the restoration projects of the historically landmarked Cemetery and Native Garden.
La Senora engages iin cultural heritage research and education. From 1670s Alta California exploration, into the Mexican Rancho Era we preserve California's sole extant rancho era family Cemetery. In the 1920s in the historic Mojica Hacienda, we bring the creativity of the noted architect who designed the hacienda and the Mexican Opera Star who built it, leaving the acoustically "perfect" Music Salon in which we provide concerts. Throughout the 1930s -40s the hacienda was occupied in a uniquely California endeavor, the Golden Age of Movies. These owners garnered over 30 academy award nominations for films whose names and stars are still, 75 years later, household words, They brought their friends, the equally famous writers, actors, photographers, scientists, philosphers home to the hacienda. Their stories of this site are explored with educational programming delivered via lectures, screenings, and symposiums.
Santuario San Lorenzo: The organization developed maintains a native California garden used in our Alta California Educational Programming with LAUSD schools. We also provide general public and historic conservation group tours several times per year. This garden provides the access to the historic Rancho Cemetery
Pascual Marquez Family Cemetery restoration work continues with the planned creation of a tile memorializing those buried there. Landscaping is underway. The cemetery is protected by Landmarking by the City of Los Angeles and the Santuario San Lorenzo Native Garden entrance.
In addition to general donation, much of our Research and Educational program collaborating with local universities is by underwritten by designated grants and sponsoring donations. Because these form the core of our mission, the excess is covered by general operating funds and memberships. In 2017 we focused these programs on the role of California and Californios in the U.S. Civil War.
