CALIFORNIA POETS IN THE SCHOOLS EMPOWERS STUDENTS OF ALL AGES THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA TO EXPRESS THEIR CREATIVITY, IMAGINATION, AND INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY THROUGH WRITING, PERFORMING AND PUBLISHING THEIR OWN POETRY. CALIFORNIA POETS IN THE SCHOOLS TRAINS AND COORDINATES A MULTICULTURAL NETWORK OF PUBLISHED POETS, WHO BRING THEIR PASSION AND CRAFT TO PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS, JUVENILE HALLS, HOSPITALS, LIBRARIES AND OTHER COMMUNITY SETTINGS.
CALIFORNIA POETS IN THE SCHOOLS IS COMMITTED TO 1) HELPING STUDENTS IN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SCHOOLS, JUVENILE HALLS, HOSPITALS, LIBRARIES AND OTHER COMMUNITY SETTINGS, RECOGNIZE AND CELEBRATE THEIR OWN CREATIVITY, INTUITION, AND INTELLECTUAL CURIOSITY THROUGH THE CREATIVE WRITING PROCESS, AND 2) PROVIDING STUDENTS WITH A MULTICULTURAL COMMUNITY OF TRAINED, PUBLISHED POETS WHO BRING THEIR EXPERIENCE AND LOVE FOR THEIR CRAFT INTO THE CLASSROOMS.
Founded 1n 1964, California Poets in the Schools (CalPoets) became an independent nonprofit in 1984 and has since grown to be one of the nation's largest writers-in-schools programs. Our statewide literary arts/education organization trains and coordinates over 100 active, professional, multicultural poets, ranging from new MFA graduates to veterans with four decades of classroom experience. Poet-Teachers are on the ground level, teaching students valuable creative writing skills, techniques, self-confidence and the freedom to dream. We are proud of our poetry program's history in which students have produced more than one million original poems.In 2017-18 CalPoets:-delivered a high quality literary arts education to over 21,500 students across the state from 239 schools, juvenile jails and childrens hospitals-partnered with counties and communities recovering from wildfires including Sonoma, Ventura, Santa Barbara and Lake in order to bring a healing creative writing curriculum to those youth who need it most-hosted 20+ county-wide readings where student poets perform their creative work in a professional venue for a wider audience including parents, school administrators and community members-led the Poetry Out loud Program in 30 counties in a unique partnership with California Arts Council-hosted an Area Coordinator retreat in Sacramento for CalPoets county leaders
