Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Imaginists is an artist run, experimental performing arts organization that explores the intersection of art and community. We continually re-think performance: who participates, where it happens and...what is it? We honor the power of live performance as a vital space for transformation, imagination, and freedom.
The Imaginists provided theater residencies in local public schools and youth theater workshops at our space. We collaborated with local artists across discipline to create unique and innovative live performance events. Though our live, in-person spring/summer classes and projects were canceled and rescheduled due to the COVID pandemic, the Imaginists' COVID/Shelter-in-Place series began in April 2020 with a free online 8 week animated series entitled "10:34", and continued with Post Theater, "theatrical performances" designed as postcards and sent by post beginning in June 2020.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR UNDERGROUND MOVEMENTS: Art & performance installation with a cohort of artists working in various mediums. Imaginists perform Halfway to Princessentity, an original work tangling witches/healers and patriarchal society's fear of powerful women and their knowledge. Four performances.Audience: 115Participants: 22
SOME PLACES WORTH LEAVING: Book release of Dani Burlison's collection of short stories "Some Places Worth Leaving" with a talk by the author and performed readings featuring the Imaginists. SOME PLACES WORTH LEAVING is a collection of short stories about women and girls and their attempts at escaping various emotional, physical, and spiritual predicaments. From creative and sometimes disturbing coping mechanisms to revenge fantasies, bad habits and magic spells, the characters in these stories provide an invitation into the dark side of what it is like to be female and the lengths women will go to survive in the world. Two performances.Audience: 100Participants: 8
POST THEATER: a monthly series with various artists (literary/visual/multidisciplinary/theater) commissioned to create performances on postcards. Since the COVID shutdown and the cancellation of all performances large and small, we've been thinking a lot about live performance, and most especially theater. What is it about the liveness of theater that cannot be replaced? What can we do in the interim? What opportunities are opening up that force us to think of different possibilities? Three "performances" by USPS.Audience: 94Participants: 4
