THE MUSEUM OF SONOMA COUNTY PRESENTS EXHIBITIONS OF CONTEMPORARY ART AND LOCAL AND REGIONAL HISTORY IN TWO BUILDINGS AND A SCULPTURE GARDEN LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN SANTA ROSA, CA. THE MUSEUM IS OPEN YEAR-ROUND WITH CHANGING EXHIBITIONS, PUBLIC PROGRAMS, SCHOOL TOURS, AND EDUCATION PROGRAMS. THE MUSEUM PRESERVES AND MANAGES A REGIONAL ART AND HISTORY COLLECTION OF OVER EIGHTEEN THOUSAND OBJECTS, THE REGION'S LARGEST OBJECT DOCUMENTATION OF SONOMA COUNTY'S HISTORY AND CULTURE. THE MUSEUM OF SONOMA COUNTY HAS BEEN A SMITHSONIAN AFFILIATE MUSEUM SINCE 2009.
OPEN OVER 300 DAYS A YEAR, THE MUSEUM OF SONOMA COUNTY SERVES OVER 25,000 VISITORS EACH YEAR, INCLUDING MORE THAN 3,000 SCHOOL CHILDREN WHO COME FOR THE MUSEUM'S FREE SCHOOL TOUR AND BUS REIMBURSEMENT GRANTS. THROUGH ONGOING LECTURES, GALLERY TALKS, CLASSES, WORKSHOPS, AND FAMILY DAYS, THE MUSEUM ACTS AS A COMMUNITY GATHERING PLACE. THESE PUBLIC PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED ON A CONSISTENT BASIS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, AND MOST ARE LOW-COST OR FREE TO MUSEUM MEMBERS.
THE MUSEUM OF SONOMA COUNTY'S COLLECTION IS COMPRISED OF OVER 18,000 ITEMS, INCLUDING FINE ART AND HISTORICAL OBJECTS. THE ART COLLECTION FOCUSES ON ARTISTS WHO HAVE LIVED, WORKED, TAUGHT, AND INFLUENCED THE ARTISTIC CULTURE OF SONOMA COUNTY AND SURROUNDING AREAS. THE HISTORICAL MATERIALS IN THE COLLECTION DOCUMENT THE HISTORY OF CALIFORNIA'S NORTH COAST REGION. MAJOR FEATURES OF THE COLLECTION INCLUDE WORKS BY ARTISTS CHRISTO AND JEANNE-CLAUDE, 19TH CENTURY CALIFORNIA LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS, AND MANY OTHER SIGNIFICANT ART AND HISTORICAL OBJECTS.
