The Sonoma County Regional Parks Foundation raises funds, fosters partnerships and advocates on behalf of Sonoma County Regional Parks. It solicits donations to help acquire, preserve and enhance 57 parks and trails throughout Sonoma County.
Park Acquisition, Preservation, and Enhancement - The Foundation contributes funds to support programs and activities in Sonoma County Regional Parks, including the following major projects in 2019-20:o Helen Putnam Regional Park, Petaluma, $52,000 Provided significant funding for renovations at this heavily-used park, including construction of new trails, re-routing of existing trails for erosion control, installation of new signage and other improvements.o Taylor Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve, Santa Rosa, $50,000 Continued extensive improvements at Taylor Mountain, particularly providing funds to acquire another parcel contiguous to the park, build new trails and construct the Red Tail Play Area. Red Tail Play Area will be completed in December 2020. o Doran Regional Park, Bodega Bay, $57,500 Construction of new accessible kayak launch; planning and design for a new trail connecting Doran Regional Park to Lucas Wharf to provide a safe alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists to avoid Highway 1.o Mark West Regional Park and Open Space Preserve, Santa Rosa, $155,000 Provided funds for work by Regional Parks planners to prepare Mark West for its opening to the public, particularly new trail construction.o Hood Mountain Regional Park and Open Space Preserve, Santa Rosa, $17,500 Provided funds for construction of the new Lawson Trail and for design and installation of interpretive signs at historic Hood House.o Maxwell Farms Regional Park, Sonoma, $15,000 Provided funds for initial construction of upgrades to this popular recreational park based on the community-designed Master Plan.o Park Furniture Program, system wide, $31,500 Installed benches, picnic tables and dedication plaques funded by contributions from families and loved ones. Maintained park benches and tables funded through this program.o Tools and equipment, park system-wide, $60,000 Provided funds to enable Regional Parks to purchase tools and equipment for park improvements through the Sonoma County Regional Parks system. Support included $30,000 in funds for new emergency radios for Regional Parks rangers.
Education Programs and Community Engagement - The Foundation supports a number of environmental education programs at Sonoma County Regional Parks, including the following major projects in 2019-20:o Caminitos and Nature Heals, system wide, $25,000 Funded transportation and logistics to help children impacted by the fires and other underserved families access the healing power of nature. o Environmental Discovery Center, system-wide, $25,000 Provided funds to underwrite field trip expenses to Sonoma County Regional Parks for elementary school students who attend under-resourced schools.o Funky Fridays, Kenwood, $7,500 Organized, staffed, and operated 6 low-cost, ADA accessible music concerts at the Hood House grounds on Friday evenings as an ongoing fundraising and marketing vehicle. (These concerts took place in the second half of summer 2019; the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19.) Funds raised at Funky Fridays supported grants to Regional Parks for trail construction at Hood Mountain, bear-proof infrastructure (garbage cans, secure food lockers) at Hood Mountain and Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, and other park projects in the Sonoma Valley.o Summer Camps, system-wide, $10,000 Provided funds to enable under-resourced youth to participate in Regional Parks summer camps.o Water Safety Patrol, Russian River, $10,000 Provided funding to purchase loaner life vests, which are distributed free of charge to thousands of visitors at the Russian River each summer, helping to prevent drowning deaths.
