Children were ready to participate in social action, demonstrated self-empowerment, and became more engaged in academic activities after participation in the CDF Freedom Schools program.
The Hannah Project had several key accomplishments under its Educational Services components. Hannah held two Equity In Action workshops focused on institutional biases and programs that support black male achievement. In addition to that, Hannah began a new program emphasis focused on parent education and advocacy. The Hannah Empowered Parents Program (HEPP) is underwritten by the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, and was organized in the fall of 2018 to strengthen the communication, collaboration, set of parents in order to help advance their employability and bolster their ability to support their children's education. Centered around personal, workforce, and democracy related skills development, HEPP training wove these threads together into a cogent curriculum built around small group discussion and civic engagement practice. The training involved a weekly four-hour session over a twenty-two-week period from mid-October to May. In addition to the discussions, the civic engagement portion of HEPP exposed parents to community leaders, school board and other community meeting processes, as well as gave participants the opportunity to interact directly in volunteer activities, event planning, and public speaking. HEPP parents participated conducted personal inventories, set goals for themselves and their children, created a community priorities survey, participated in monthly school board and school site council meetings, an organized family night activities . Long term, it is expected that participation in HEPP will help parents improve positive parent-child interactions; increase children's participation in academic support programs. expand the capacity of parents as change agents for children; develop a supportive parental community; and foster increased utilization of parents in policy and process decisions.
