Organizations Filed Purposes: To inspire and empower the youth of Monterey County to realize their full potential to become responsible, healthy, productive and successful citizens.

To provide guidance and promote the health, social, educational, vocational and character development of youth.

The Boys & Girls Club of Monterey County has been a part of the community since 1968. We serve an average of 600 children per day between the ages of 6 to 18 through two full service clubhouses. Our programming is based on Boys & Girls Clubs of America's three priority outcomes: Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, and Good Character & Citizenship. These three priority outcomes, along with 21st Century Skill Development are the focus of our programming. The goal of our Academic Success Initiative is that every child we serve achieves on time grade progression, graduates from high school, completes post secondary education and earns a livable wage as a productive member of their community. In order to achieve this goal we offer a wide range of Academic programming from homework assistance for club members of all ages, to intervention programs in literacy for members in the 2nd-5th grade. In March of 2020 we modified our services for youth in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic and began offering virtual programming. We were able to offer our reading intervention program, Read Naturally, art programs, book clubs and more. In this way we were able to continue services for our kids even with the clubhouses closed to members. During the summer of 2020 we had in the clubhouse and virtual programs for youth. Summer program virtually and in the club was a full day of programming, with STEAM, literacy, art and more. Activities in the clubhouse were done in small pod groups for the safety and health of our members. Members stayed with the same pod for the entire summer. Our Healthy Lifestyles Initiative promotes wellness amongst Club members and their families in order to live healthier lives and build stronger and more informed communities. Targeted programming within the Healthy Lifestyles Initiative focus on prevention and learning opportunities with emphasis on nutritional education, avoidance of risky behaviors, improving self esteem, recreational opportunities, and developing pro-social behaviors. In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic we began supporting the community by offering grab & go meals at both of our clubhouses and distributing meals in Gonzales, Marina, Salinas, Seaside and Soledad. In 2020 we provided 151,130 meals and snacks. The Good Character & Citizenship Initiative develops strong, smart leaders and encourages youth to become community minded and engaged citizens who vote and model strong character. The Boys & Girls Club of Monterey County works to foster young people's good character, their ability to make positive life choices and their willingness to serve others. To recognize and acknowledge members' leadership and participation we have our Youth of the Month and Youth of the Year program. Members receive acknowledgement at our club meetings and in virtual classes culminating in the Youth of the Year program. One youth is chosen to represent the Boys & Girls Club of Monterey County that exemplifies our outcome areas, club participation and his/her leadership. Members submit an application, go through 3 rounds of judging and are then honored at our Youth of the Year celebration. This year the celebration was done completely virtually, with members sharing their speeches via video. Beyond our recognition we hosted the 6th annual Gang Prevention Summit in Salinas in January 2020, open to the community where panelists discussed their involvement and/or avoidance of gangs. A post summit survey revealed that 83% of the 109 surveyed youth attendees stated that they were less likely to join a gang.
