THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY INTERFAITH COUNCIL, OR VIC, AS IT HAS BECOME KNOWN, IS A WELL-ESTABLISHED 501(C) (3) NONPROFIT THAT HAS SERVED VALLEY COMMUNITIES SINCE 1964. WORKING WITH THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES, OTHER PARTNERS AND STAKEHOLDERS, VIC PROVIDES CRITICAL SOCIAL SERVICES INCLUDING MEALS AND AN ARRAY OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS ACTIVITIES TO RAISE THE QUALITY OF LIFE AND WELL-BEING OF OLDER ADULTS, 60+ YEARS OF AGE. THOSE OF LOW-INCOME, THE FRAIL AND ELDERLY, AND THOSE TEMPORARILY DISABLED OR CHRONICALLY ILL, ARE THE FOCUS OF VIC PROGRAMS AND SERVICES. VIC PROVIDED OVER 40,000 RIDES TO ELIGIBLE SENIORS ITS TRANSPORTATION SERVICES PROGRAM. CENTERS HAVE FIVE VEHICLES EACH THAT TRANSPORT SENIORS TO THE FACILITY FOR MEALS AND ACTIVITIES EVERY MONDAY-FRIDAY. THE VEHICLES ALSO TRANSPORT SENIORS TO REGULAR DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS AND WHEN A SENIOR IS RELEASED FROM THE HOSPITAL. THE INTIAL THREE WEEKS OF FOLLOW-UP DOCTOR VISITS AFTER RELEASE FROM A HOSPITAL ARE CRITICAL TO PREVENT RE-HOSPITALIZATION. CENTER VEHICLES ARE ALSO UTILIZED TO TRANSPORT SENIORS TO RECREATIONAL AND EDUCATIONAL EVENTS.PARTNERING WITH UCLA, STANFORD AND THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES AND OTHERS, VIC CONTINUES TO EXPAND PROGRAMS IN VALLEY COMMUNITIES FOR OLDER ADULTS. THE EVIDENCE-BASED PROGRAM (EBP) CONTINUES TO GROW LOCATIONS OFFERING VARIOUS EDUCATIONAL/PHISICAL MODULES IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH. VIC IS ALSO COLLABORATING WITH INTERGENERATIONAL PARTNERS TO BRING YOUTH AND SENIORS TOGETHER. VIC'S PACIMA CENTER PARTNERED WITH EL NIDO, A NONPROFIT THAT SERVES TEENS. IN A GRANT SUPPORTED BY THE EISNER FOUNDATION, TEENS FROM EL NIDO PARTICIPATE WITH SENIORS IN THE EBP PROGRAM FOR JOB TRAINING AND A LIVING HISTORY PROGRAM. BOTH GOALS PROVIDE EDUCATION, INSIGHT AND THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMBAT AGEISM. VIC IS ALSO INVOLVED IN A PILOT PROGRAM FROM THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON AGING (NCOA), MONITORED BY UCLA. VIC HAD THE ONLY CENTER IN THE VALLEY TO BE RECRUITED FOR THE PROGRAM BY THE CITY OF LOS ANGELES DEPARTMENT OF AGING.

VIC PROVIDED APPROXIMATELY 265,000 MEALS, MONDAY-FRIDAY, AT CONGREGATE DINING CENTERS WITHIN FOUR MULTIPURPOSE SENIOR CENTERS ACROSS THE VALLEY IN DIVERSE COMMUNITIES, INCLUDING 19 SATELLITE SITES, A HOME-DELIVERED MEAL PROGRAM, AND A SEPARATE MEALS-ON-WHEELS PROGRAM WITH NO RESTRICTION OF AGE OR INCOME. 1,000-1,500 SENIORS ARE SERVED DAILY BY THE FOUR COMMUNITY CENTERS AND SITES. A HOT NUTRITIOUS LUNCH AND ACTIVITIES ATTRACT SENIORS TO THE CENTERS FOR IMPORTANT SOCIALIZATION NEEDED TO OFFSET A GROWING NATIONAL EPIDEMIC OF ISOLATION AND LONELINESS AND THE DEPRESSION IT PRODUCES. RECENT RESEARCH IS SHOWING DEPRESSION IS THE MOST IMPACTFUL DETERMINATE IN THE DECLINE OF ONE'S HEALTH.
