The California Independent Boooksellers Alliance (CALIBA) is a trade organization dedicated to supporting, nurturing and promoting independent retail bookselling in California. With over 500 members, including nearly 300 booksellers, the NCIBA has been an experienced provider of advocacy, education and services for over three decades.
Promoting the vitality, diversity and prosperity of independent bookselling as essential to the life of our communities and crucial to the dissemination of ideas in society.
Covid-19 wreaked havoc throughout the book industry. As our retail bookstores pivoted to being online fulfillment centers, we also pivoted to hosting events and meetings via Zoom. We waived membership dues for 2020 for our bookstores. The uncertainty of the times causes our publishing partners to be reluctant to spend the money they traditionally have for promotional opportunities for our marketing campaigns and author discussions and title alerts. Even though our income took a hit, our expenses were also down.
