TO INSPIRE LEARNING THROUGH CREATIVE PLAY AND DISCOVERY.
Our biggest achievement this year was the design, construction and opening of our new imaginary play exhibit: Sierra Settlers - Riding the Rails to Truckee. Our focus for the first phase of the exhibit is the 1860s -1890s during which railroad travel significantly increased with the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. A tremendous amount of careful thought by the exhibits committee went into the design of this exhibit which includes a steam engine with steam that comes out, a coal tender and a passenger car; a train ticket office; a chinese herb shop; a blacksmith shop; a boarding house and a theater. The project was completed by volunteers, gifts and donations. We had 22,577 visitors to the museum and our offsite programs. To ensure underserved families can attend the museum and our programs, we provide free bus service, bilingual staff who conduct outreach in various neighborhoods to bring information and programs to this audeince. This year we had 223 bus riders, 1060 scholarship visits, and gave 52 scholarship memberships. In total for all programs and membership scholarships we distributed 109. Due to the COVID19 Pandemic the KidZone Museum closed to the public on 03/14/20. All programs, events, and outreach programs were cancelled following guidelines by local, state and federal officials. Our staff had to readjust and adapt to the circumstances that came along with the pandemic, and the closure has had a significant effect on our income.
