VLI provides free legal assistance to low-income veterans & active duty military.
Because of the pandemic, Southern California Veterans were at greater risk of homelessness and suicide. During 2020, VLI managed 1472 active cases by leveraging over 200 volunteers, of which at least 70 were pro bono attorneys from solo and large firms. In addition to veterans benefits achieved, VLI conservatively recovered close to $500,000 in civilian monetary benefits. Many of these cases were complicated by the pandemic. The Veterans were diverse with 34% being older, 27% Post 9/11, over 63% were Black, Indigenous, and People of color, and over 40% self-identifying as disabled. Women Veterans were 16% of VLI cases, which remains a significant concern as Women Veterans make up 8% of the total California Veteran population. More than 2 dozen cases were for military sexual trauma, 30% were complex veterans benefits cases, and more than 150 cases were dedicated to keeping Veterans and their families safely housed. Over 60 mobile clinic dates were held at eight strategic Veteran hotspots. At least 30 specialty clinics were held in practice areas not commonly found in public interest law, which included family law, estate planning, veterans benefits, and women specific. Because of the pandemic, VLI switched all in-person operations to remote and continued free legal service without interruption.
