Organizations Filed Purposes: The AFE Foundation works to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity from AFE by advancing research through our AFE Registry, promoting clinical education, expanding awareness, and supporting those affected by amniotic fluid embolism.

The AFE Foundation is the only organization dedicated to amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a life-threatening birth complication that remains a leading cause of maternal death and suffering in the United States and abroad. The AFE Foundation is comprised of affected families, respected clinicians, world-renowned researchers, and engaged advocates working together to reduce maternal and infant mortality and morbidity (near death) due to amniotic fluid embolism. We do this through advancing research, promoting clinician education, raising awareness, and offering support to those affected. We envision a world where AFE no longer threatens the lives of mothers and their babies. The AFE Foundation is proud to underwrite the Amniotic Fluid Embolism Registry and biospecimen repository in collaboration with researchers from Baylor College of Medicine. Wayne State University, and the Perinatalogy Research Branch of the National Institute of Health. The registry and repository allow researchers greater insight into the individual cases of AFE. The biorepository holds specimens which will be used in various proteomic and genomic studies. Several scientific abstracts, papers and opinions based on data from the registry have been published in medical journals in the areas of critical care obstetrics and gynecology. The AFE Foundation continues to be a leading patient advocacy organization and holds multiple board positions in influential maternal health and patient safety and quality institutions and associations; most notably, the CDC Partnership for Reducing Maternal Mortality and Morbidity, the Council for Patient Safety in Womens Health Care, the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC), Institute for Perinatal Quality Improvement, and the Obstetric Life Support Study. Most notably, in 2018 the AFE Foundation co-founded MoMMAs Voices, a coalition of patient advocacy organizations and individuals focused on Maternal Mortality and Morbidity in the United States. MoMMAs Voices helps facilitate Champions for Change a training program for patients and families to learn the key issues in maternal mortality and be prepared to serve as volunteers in the maternal health sector. The AFE Foundation led the successful passing of a Department of Health Bill (Section 68 of Public Act 18-168) in the state of Connecticut which mandates all labor and delivery clinicians receive education on amniotic fluid embolism as provided by the AFE Foundation. The foundation continues to promote education among the many discipline in labor and delivery. Over 10,000 clinicians have received direct education from the AFE Foundation through lectures, symposiums, panels, webinars, and publications. In 2019, approximately 1400 families received direct support from the organization to assist with physical, emotional, and financial hardships associated with experiencing an amniotic fluid embolism. The AFE Foundation continues to be the primary source of accurate and reliable information for patients, their families, and clinicians around the world. With website visits over 70,000 a year in over 50 countries, it remains the greatest source of global awareness and education of AFE.
