TO CREATE MUSICAL EXPERIENCES THAT STRENGTHEN OUR ROLE AS A LEADER AMOUNG LESBIAN, GAY, BISEXUAL, TRANSGENDER (LGBT) AND PERFORMING ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, ENRICH OUR MEMBER-ARTISTS, SUPPORT LGBT YOUTH, CHALLENGE HOMOPHOBIA, AND EXPOSE NEW COMMUNITIES TO OUR MESSAGE OF EQUALITY.
Annual Performance Season: In December of 2019 GMCLA was able to present its annual tradition, Holiday Spectacular, at Alex Theatre, for the first time with a Woman of Color Jenny Wong at the podium. We received rave reviews, and were looking forward to presenting a fantastic season, but plans were derailed by the global pandemic one month before our April 2020 Concert. No longer able to meet in person for rehearsals or performances, GMCLA pivoted to virtual rehearsals, performances, and programs throughout the rest of 2020.
INCARCERATED YOUTH: For the Arts for Incarcerated Youth program, in early FY20 we engaged the services of teaching artists, along with our usual staff and Chorus Members, to engage with youth until the pandemic disallowed in-person meetings. After the pandemic, our staff continued in programming meetings with AIYN staff throughout 2020.
ALIVE MUSIC PROJECT: In the early part of FY20 we were able to maintain our plans regarding our youth engagement program, Alive Music Project. We presented several live performances in schools and engaged with several thousand students. When restrictions made in-person performances impossible, we made online curriculum available to our participating schools to maintain our message of acceptance and music for Los Angeles area youth.
