Organizations Filed Purposes:
To bring interspecies communication to the public, in order to save gorillas from extinction, and inspire our children to create a sustainable future for all great apes.
To learn about gorillas by communicating with them, and apply the knowledge and empathy thus gained to advance great ape conservation and optimize their care in captivity.
Welfare: Gorilla Ndume was returned to the Cincinnati Zoo in June 2019, after having lived at The Gorilla Foundations Sanctuary in Woodside, California, with Koko (who passed away in 2018) for almost 27 years. During the remainder of 2019, The Gorilla Foundation visited Ndume at the zoo, monitored his well-being, and began documenting the differences between zoo life and sanctuary life for gorillas, with the intent of helping zoos transition to more sanctuary-like settings, providing gorillas with more autonomy and communication opportunities.
Education: Development of a new web platform at Koko.org, called Kids4Koko, which is aimed at transmitting Kokos legacy to future generations, starting with todays kids. Kids4Koko teaches kids of all ages how to sign like Koko, paint like Koko and Michael, read about her unique life (as well as her companions Michael Ndume), and become Voices for Nature to help save gorillas from extinction and protect Nature s biodiversity.
Conservation: While our Education program is geared at both advancing Welfare and Conservation, there is a subset of materials that are intended primarily for distribution in Africa, where gorilla conservation is a local issue. Books and videos about gorilla Michael, who was a bushmeat orphan and lived to tell the world about his memory in sign language, fall into this category.
