Organizations Filed Purposes: THE CHOIR SCHOOL OF DELAWARE (CSD) PROVIDES A TRANSFORMATIONAL EXPERIENCE FOR YOUTH AGES 7-17 IN THE GREATER WILMINGTON AREA, THE MAJORITY OF WHOM ARE CONSIDERED AT-RISK. THE CHOIR SCHOOL OFFERS A YEAR-ROUND EDUCATION PROGRAM THAT HAS A STRONG LEGACY OF SERVING AND ENGAGING WILMINGTON'S YOUTH AND FAMILIES THROUGH MUSIC AND MENTORING. STUDENTS RECEIVE FULL MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM. OUR STUDENTS CONTINUE TO ACHIEVE A 100% GRADUATION RATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND GO ON TO COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES, TRADES SCHOOLS AND MILITARY SERVICE. OUR INTERGENERATIONAL MODEL CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE NO CHILD IS FAR FROM AN ADULT WHO MODELS GOOD BEHAVIOR, OFFERS ENCOURAGEMENT AND SUPPORTS THE CHILD'S ACADEMIC NEEDS. CSD CONTINUES TO REACH OUT TO URBAN YOUTH AND PROVIDE A SAFE, PRODUCTIVE AND CREATIVE SPACE; MUSIC AND MENTORING WORK HAND-IN-HAND SO THAT "HARMONIZING LIFE AND LEARNING" IS AT THE CORE OF THE CHOIR SCHOOL'S MISSION.

TO PROVIDE MUSIC AND ACADEMIC INSTRUCTION TO YOUTH, WITHOUT REGARD TO THEIR RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION, EMPHASIZING EXCELLENCE IN THE RECITAL HALL AS WELL AS IN STUDENTS' LIVES, AND TO INSTILL IN THEM THE QUALITIES OF DISCIPLINE, RESPONSIBILITY, LEADERSHIP AND TEAMWORK.

"HARMONIZING LIFE AND LEARNING" CCSD'S AFTER-SCHOOL MUSIC EDUCATION AND MENTORING PROGRAMS ARE FULLY INTEGRATED. MUSIC INSTRUCTION IS USED AS A BASIS FOR LEARNING; MATH AND READING SKILLS ARE NECESSARY TO PERFORM MUSIC. IN TURN, THOSE SKILLS ARE HONED AND APPLIED TO OTHER ACADEMIC PURSUITS. WE OFFER PROFESSIONAL CHORAL TRAINING, PIANO, VOICE AND MUSICIANSHIP LESSONS WITH OPPORTUNITIES FOR PERFORMANCE AND TRAVEL. STUDENTS ALSO RECEIVE ACADEMIC TUTORING, ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING, LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES AND PARTICIPATE IN ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES. MUSIC LESSONS ENHANCE MUSICIANSHIP AND FOSTER SKILLS SUCH AS DISCIPLINE AND ABSTRACT REASONING THAT ARE TRANSFERRABLE TO OTHER ACADEMIC PURSUITS.

SUMMER CAMP - CSD'S FIVE-WEEK SUMMER CAMP IS OFFERED TO CHILDREN AGES 6-12 SO THAT OUR COMMITMENT TO AT-RISK CHILDREN IS YEAR-ROUND. 35 CHILDREN WERE ENROLLED THIS YEAR. THE CAMP "BRIDGES THE GAP" IN SUMMER LEARNING FOR NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN FROM GENERALLY LOW-INCOME FAMILIES. A FUN AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT WAS PROVIDED. SUMMER COURSES INCLUDED READING, MATH, MUSIC AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION (INCLUDING OUTDOOR EXPERIENCES). READING AND MATH INSTRUCTION WAS LED BY PROFESSIONAL EDUCATORS AND WERE TAILORED TO THE NEEDS OF EACH GROUP THEY TAUGHT. MUSIC CLASSES FOCUSED ON SINGING, RHYTHMS AND THE USE OF ORFF INSTRUMENTS.
