DFSME IS A BUSINESS-EDUCATION-COMMUNITY-GOVERNMENT PARTNERSHIP DEDICATED TO CATALYZING DELAWARE'S PREPARATION OF A GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE WORKFORCE WITH MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE SKILLS SECOND TO NONE. THE FOUNDATION ADVOCATES FOR ADOPTION OF WORLD-CLASS STANDARDS; ENABLES THE EXPLORATION, EVALUATION, ADAPTATION, AND IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIVE AND EFFECTIVE MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE PROGRAMS IN DELAWARE PUBLIC SCHOOLS; AND FOCUSES ON IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF ALL DELAWARE STUDENTS SO THAT THEY FINISH HIGH SCHOOL READY FOR COLLEGE CAREER, AND SUCCESS IN THE GLOBAL ECONOMY.
STUDENT SERVICES - FROM 1996 THROUGH 2019, DFSME IDENTIFIED, PILOTED AND SUPPORTED THE SMITHSONIAN SCIENCE CURRICULUM USED IN ALL PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN DELAWARE. THE CURRICULUM RAISED DELAWARE'S STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN SCIENCE AS MEASURED ON THE NAEP (KNOWN AS THE NATION'S REPORT CARD) FROM 35TH OUT OF 44 STATES AND JURISDICTIONS TESTED TO 19TH OUT OF 45 STATES AND JURISDICTIONS. DELAWARE WAS ONE OF THE EARLY ADOPTERS OF THE NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS (NGSS) AND THE COMMON CORE. DFSME IS NOW WORKING WITH THE DELAWARE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND DELAWARE SCIENCE COALITION SUPPORTING TEACHER TRAINING, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND PILOTING OF THE NGSS. DFSME WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE FORMATION OF THE JOHN W. COLLETTE EDUCATION RESOURCE CENTER IN DOVER, A CENTRAL LOCATION FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, THE DELAWARE SCIENCE COALITION AND DELAWARE MATH COALITION, AS WELL AS SERVING AS THE CENTRAL WAREHOUSE FOR THE STATE'S SCIENCE KITS. THE CENTER POOLS STATE FUNDS AND FEDERAL AND COMPETITIVE GRANTS TO PURCHASE KIT MATERIALS AT A SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNT. THE REPLENISHMENT, DISTRIBUTION AND STORAGE OF THE THOUSANDS OF KITS USED THROUGHOUT THE STATE TAKES PLACE AT THE CENTER. DFSME'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SERVES ON THE BOARD OF THE DELAWARE MATH COALITION AND THE DELAWARE SCIENCE COALITION. DFSME WORKS WITH AND SERVES AS FISCAL AGENT FOR THE DELAWARE MATH COALITION AND ASSISTS THE COALITION IN ITS WORK DEVELOPING AND PILOTING INQUIRY BASED MATH CURRICULUM, TEACHER TRAINING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. THE FOUNDATION ALSO WORKS WITH AND IS FISCAL AGENT FOR THE DELAWARE STEM COUNCIL.
