Organizations Filed Purposes: Partnership for the Delaware Estuary, Inc. (PDE), host of the Delaware Estuary program, leads science-based and collaborative efforts to improve the tidal Delaware River and Bay, which spans Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

During 2019, PDE continued a number of multi-year projects and began new ones based on partnerships created and grants received.Science and Research: PDE continued monitoring wetlands across the Delaware Estuary as part of the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Wetlands Assessment program, collecting data on water quality, elevation, and plants for 7 tidal marshes within NJ and DE. PDE staff also launched a new research project this year to study how rising sea levels are affecting forests along tidal marsh margins. Living shorelines efforts continued at various locations throughout the Estuary. Living shorelines are a more natural way to address coastal erosion and sea level rise, while also providing habitat and water quality benefits. PDE scientists monitored and maintained 11 living shorelines installations in NJ and DE, including living shorelines sites at Money Island, NJ and Mispillion Harbor, DE. New living shoreline projects were also conceptualized for the Schuylkill River waterfront in PA. Freshwater mussel research continued in 2019, such as exploring use of mussels to promote water quality in Stormwater Ponds. Planning continued for the new mussel hatchery, which is expected to be constructed in Philadelphia, PA. As part of this overall freshwater mussel restoration effort, more than 100 volunteers were engaged to bag oyster shells and to search for freshwater mussels in local waterways. Education and Outreach: PDE continued to provide school and community outreach to educate local citizens about the Delaware Estuary. A Watershed Workshop for teachers was held to introduce educators to topics related to the Estuary, and provide them with the information and training needed to bring these topics and lessons into their classrooms. PDE staff participated in numerous public outreach events, including PDE-organized events such as Delaware River Fest, held in Camden and Philadelphia in September, and the Wilmington Earth Day Festival, held in April. Through these events, PDE reached thousands of people with information about PDE's work and the importance of protecting the Estuary and its watershed. PDE hosted river/stream clean ups to promote clean water and litter prevention, including the Christina River Cleanup in Wilmington, DE, the Schuylkill Scrub in PA and the South Jersey Scrub in NJ.
