Organizations Filed Purposes:
Urban Bike Project supports Wilmington communities by providing access to bicycling as a healthy, affordable and practical means of transportation and recreation.
Open shop: Our adult programming provides residents access to transportation self-sufficiency through mechanical education and affordable bicycles. During open shop hours visitors can shop for affordable used bikes (350 bikes sold) and use our tools and stands to repair their bicycles with help form volunteer mechanics (1,052 visitors).
Youth programs: Youth ages 8-17 can repair their bicycles, volunteer for UBP in exchange for shop credit, take a series of mechanics classes to earn a free bicycle, and participate in weekend bicycle rides. Our youth programs provide youth opportunities to develop confidence and patience, improve problem solving skills, explore their outdoor environment, and develop meaningful relationships with positive adult role models. 226 youth participated in programs in 2019. Fifty nine of these youth completed free Earn-A-Bike programs. 29 individuals worked as volunteers. We also offer school programs (39 youth participants across 3 schools) and two week-long bike-themed summer camps which employed two youth mentors providing work experience (18 participants).
Free Bike Program: Low income adults can apply to receive a free bike, lock, lights, and helmet to use for transportation to jobs, job interviews and other necessary services. Free bike recipients also receive free repair services on their bike for the lifetime of that bicycle. In 2019, we distributed 90 free bikes to Wilmington residents.
