Organizations Filed Purposes: Winterthur builds upon the vision of Henry Francis du Pont to inspire and educate through its collections, estate, and academic programs by engaging diverse audiences in the study, preservation, and interpretation of American material culture, art, design, and history.

Winterthur's mission is to preserve and enhance the legacy of its founder, Henry Francis du Pont, for the benefit and enjoyment of the public, including: the care, development, and study of its preeminent collection of decorative and fine arts made or used in America; the enhancement and interpretation of one of America's finest naturalistic gardens; the operation of graduate programs in American material culture and art conservation at the highest academic level; the operation and development of a library to support these important cultural goals; and the preservation of the historically important buildings and grounds.

Public Visitation, Membership, and Public Relations:Winterthur welcomed 121,085 guests in FY20. Guided house/gallery tours (serving 50,000 in FY20) and garden/estate tours (serving 60,000), were part of a robust calendar of year-round, onsite programs for learners of all ages. Highlights included interactive, curriculum-based, and developmentally-appropriate programs for learners in preK-12th grade, augmented by virtual field trips and in-class programs led by School Guides. To ensure that underrepresented students had access to educational programs, Winterthur waived admission and subsidized school bus transportation through dedicated scholarship opportunities. Winterthur, the only museum in the area with a conservation lab, enabled students to go behind the scenes through unique conservation programs (Bugs in the Museum, STEAM Superheroes, and Discover the Science) created for elementary, middle, and high school students, respectively. Continuing education for adults featured two seasonal lecture series aligned with major exhibitions; an author series; book clubs; hands-on workshops, classes, and courses; a summer and winter performing arts series; professional development workshops for classroom teachers; conservation clinics, two academic conferences that attract national and international registrations, and the widely respected Winterthur Institute, a three-week intense course of study.Children and families discovered a regularly scheduled menu of programs, such as Story Time in Enchanted Woods, and Curious Kids, balanced with creative activities in backpacks for check out and use in the permanent collection galleries to promote intergenerational learning. Annual community programs included Fantastic Fridays, offered during the summer and after school in cooperation with the Salvation Army, taught by Winterthur Guides and teen volunteers. The summer season kicks off with Enchanted Summer Day (June) Terrific Tuesdays, a weekly program in July and August for 3-10 year olds and caregivers, Truck & Tractor Day (October), and Yuletide at Winterthur (44 days, November through January), which celebrated its 40th season in 2020. Winterthur started FY20 with 9,687 member households and ended with 10,177 member households.Winterthur held a Member Appreciation and Double Discount Day in November 2019 which included a lecture and the attendance at that was 250 members/11 nonmembers. Small capacity programs were held for the upper level members. Other programming included a Yoga, Wine, and Cheese event in Sept. 2019, weekly Wellness Yoga classes including a virtual option and Wellness Hikes. There were no membership sponsored programs after March 2020 because of COVID.

Curatorial, Conservation, Education, Library Programs:Research Fellowship Program - Winterthur administers a Research Fellowship Program, which annually funds national and international scholars and creators to conduct research at Winterthur. Winterthur hosted 29 Research Fellows in FY20. The Program provides Research Fellows with staff support in areas of logistics and project consultations; access to collections and facilities; opportunities to present and publish; and opportunities to interface with graduate students.Graduate Programs - With University of Delaware, Winterthur administers and provides instruction in the Winterthur/UD graduate programs (the Winterthur Program in American Material Culture and the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation). To date, there have been 1,005 graduates of these two programs. Graduate Program activity includes teaching core, elective, and independent study coursework at Winterthur; organizing and leading national and international field study trips; serving as major/thesis advisors and providing mentorship and career counseling for students; identifying internship opportunities; organizing program events; identifying and facilitating collaborative opportunities between the two programs and with University of Delaware departments for student coursework, professional development and research funding, and campus resources; and supporting successful postgraduate placement. Winterthur Portfolio - In partnership with the University of Chicago Press, Winterthur administers an in-house academic journal, Winterthur Portfolio: A Journal of American Material Culture, publishing 3 issues annually. Winterthur Portfolio activity includes: solicitation/selection/editing of peer-reviewed articles and book reviews for publication; working with the Press on aspects of the journal's production; enhancing support for authors and promoting guidelines for sharing published work; promoting the journal and Winterthur at professional events; and overseeing the journal's editorial board and budget. Winterthur Library - The mission of the library is to acquire, catalog, preserve, and make its collections available to the public. During FY20 the library added 130 archival lots and 875 books and periodicals by purchase and gift; cataloged and updated 949 records; and lent 216 books through interlibrary loan. We counted 433 user days in the manuscript and archive collections and 2,774 user days in the Printed Book and Periodical Collection. Staff added significantly to our electronic resources with the production of digital collections.

Garden / Facilities Program:Winterthur maintains a world-renowned 200-acre naturalistic garden that welcomes visitors from all parts of the globe. The collection of rare and historic plants includes magnolias, azaleas, minor bulbs, conifers, and specimen trees. Significant varieties in the collection are tracked or "accessioned" through a records system, which currently includes more than 15,000 accessions. We continued the restoration and enhancement of numerous garden areas including the Sundial Garden, Reflecting Pool, and Enchanted Garden. Restoration of ironwork and statuary continues to be a priority.
