Organizations Filed Purposes: TO SUPPORT ENTREPRENEUERS AND EARLY-STAGE COMPANIES IN THE CEDAR VALLEY.

WE CONTINUE TO OPERATE MILL RACE COWORKING AS A SHARED WORKSPACE FOR NEW BUSINESS FOUNDERS AND STARTUP COMPANIES IN THE CEDAR VALLEY (PROVIDING SUBSIDIZED SPACE & SUPPORT). THERE WERE OVER 30 ACTIVE COMPANIES OPERATING OUT OF MILL RACE COWORKING, A MAJORITY OF WHICH REPRESENT STARTUP COMPANIES BASED LOCALLY IN CEDAR FALLS. THE KEY OBJECTIVE IS TO PROVIDE A PHYSICAL SPACE FOR ENTREPRENEURS AND NEW STARTUPS TO WORK, CONNECT WITH AND LEARN FROM ONE ANOTHER, INCLUDING HAVING ACCESS TO A NETWORK OF MENTORS AND ADVISORS THROUGH PROGRAMS AND WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE AT MILL RACE.

WE LAUNCHED TWO NEW ENTREPRENRENEUR TRAINING PROGRAMS FOCUSED ON SUPPORTING EARLY-STAGE, FIRST-TIME BUSINESS FOUNDERS. THE FIRST, A LICENSED PROGRAM CALLED CO.STARTERS, GRADUATED 15 BUSINESS FOUNDERS FROM THE 10-WEEK PROGRAM IN THE FALL OF 2019, WITH A SECOND COHORT THAT STARTED IN JANUARY OF 2020. THE FALL COHORT WAS MADE UP OF OVER 50% MINORITY OWNED BUSINESS FOUNDERS. THE SECOND PROGRAM LAUNCHED WAS A TWO-MONTH ENTREPRENEUER TRAINING PROGRAM CALLED FLUENT, WAS DESIGNED TO ASSIST FURTHER-ALONG STARTUPS MORE QUICKLY VALIDATE THEIR BUSINESS MODEL AND BEGIN TO MARKET AND SCALE UP THEIR BUSINESS. THE PROGRAM GRADUATED FOUR COMPANIES IN THE FALL 2019 COHORT. THE KEY OBJECTIVE OF THESE PROGRAMS IS TO HELP NEW BUSINESS FOUNDERS LEARN FASTER AND REDUCE THE RISK OF LAUNCHING THEIR NEW BUSINESS. THEY COVER THE BASICS OF BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS MODEL, FROM IDENTIFYING TARGET CUSTOMERS AND THE PROBLEMS THEY FACE TO THE ACTUAL EXPENSE AND REVENUE STRUCTURE OF THE BUSINESS.

WE HAD 20 NEW BUSINESS STARTUPS PRESENT AT 1 MILLION CUPS, A MONTHLY EVENT DESIGNED TO PROVIDE TWO BUSINESS STARTUPS THE OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT THEIR IDEA (WITH PRESENTATION COACHING PROVIDED) AND RECEIVE VALUABLE COMMUNITY FEEDBACK AND CONNECTIONS TO HELP THEM GROW. WE ALSO HELD A WEEK-LONG SERIES CALLED CEDAR VALLEY STARTUP WEEK WHICH CONSISTED OF WORKSHOPS, FIRESIDE CHATS AND EVENTS TO SUPPORT ENTREPRENEURS AND NEW BUSINESS STARTUPS. THESE EVENTS WERE HELD IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TECHSTARS WITH OVER 325 PEOPLE IN ATTENDENCE ACROSS OVER 20 EVENTS DURING THE WEEK-LONG PERIOD. THE EVENT WAS COORDINATED THROUGH VOLUNTEER SUPPORT FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NORTHERN IOWA, HAWKEYE COMMUNITY COLLEGE, AND OUR LOCAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OFFICE.
