Organizations Filed Purposes: Empowering choices for life through Christ-centered education and support.

Client Support/Earn While You Learn Program: Clients who are pregnant or have children (up to 18 years of age) in the home can sign up for classes at Bridgehaven. They complete a form that covers basic areas of life, including family relationships, career plans, spirituality and emotional life. Our Director of Client Support evaluates where he or she might have the greatest need. Then, a current course in the areas of family, relationships, spirituality or life skills is selected based on that need. Each week, the client comes to the center for class. The client is able to shop for material assistance, including: clothing, food, household and personal items, diapers and formula. Yearly benefits based on good attendance include: school supplies, holiday food baskets, winter clothing and Christmas gifts for children. Clients in our prenatal class with 92% attendance earn a free crib or car seat.

Prevention: The mission of our prevention team is to promote sexual integrity through risk avoidance education, mentoring, and partnerships with community organizations. Our educators provide an opportunity to hear clearly researched, reasoned, and medically accurate presentations regarding the benefits of developing healthy relationships, delaying sexual activity, and creating a habit of impulse control for elementary through college-aged students. Some topics include: communication (refusal skills, expressing emotions, handling conflict), boundaries (love vs. infatuation, physical intimacy, family rules), reproductive anatomy (puberty, pregnancy & birth, anatomy), making healthy decisions (identifying & overcoming obstacles, decision making, choices & effects), risk behaviors (substance abuse, pornography, social media & advertising), consequences (STDs, whole person, pregnancy), job readiness (interview skills, soft skills), self-awareness (emotional/mental, social self, personal strengths, passions), future orientation (success sequencing, life recipe, goals, hopes & dreams) and Brave Parenting (parent education that includes communication, social media, pornography, unsafe people, and sexual risk). Our team is able to respond in the community in ways that are appropriate for each unique situation. Our time in schools can be 1 to 10 day curriculums for students at all levels in public and private settings. Community work includes youth groups, student organizations, and parent groups. At-risk groups are an especially vulnerable population that our team loves to work with. These groups include: ASAC/CD+, Foundation 2, The ARC, DHS Youth Shelter, Unity Point LIFE Groups, and Heart of Iowa. Last, our team is equipped to work one-on-one with individuals. Topics might include spiritual growth, self-esteem, pressure, healthy relationships, and sexual health education. These sessions could be one-time situations or could be on-going.

Client Advocacy: Bridgehaven provides free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds to clients. Clients meet with trained advocates to discuss all options and then administer a pregnancy test under the supervision of our trained staff and volunteers. If they bring support people with them, they are welcome to be part of the testing. We also have male advocates who are available to meet with any male partners who come. The basis of this consultation is to provide medically accurate information to our clients about all their options, including referrals to adoption agencies within our community. Bridgehaven provides free ultrasounds for clients who come to the center with confirmed pregnancies that are estimated to be at least seven weeks. Our medical department is overseen by our medical director, a doctor who both reviews scans and provides exams for clients. We have a part-time nurse manager and a volunteer who also complete ultrasound exams. That appointment begins with medical history discussion and then support people are invited in for the actual scan. Sometimes, our clients do not have primary care providers so this appointment is often "gap care". We provide a limited ultrasound exam and check for three things: placement in the uterus, heartbeat to ensure the pregnancy is viable and size to determine a due date. Once those things are confirmed, we can offer clients medically accurate information and answer their questions, as well as recommend agencies for prenatal care. Clients leave with a list of resources in the community and we provide prenatal vitamins if that is a need. We are also able to provide information on smoking cessation and other materials about healthy pregnancy. With our STI testing pilot program, we are able to offer our most at-risk clients screening for infections through our partnership with Linn County Public Health. This relationship offers us the ability to help clients who might not otherwise get tested an option for testing and treatment.
