Organizations Filed Purposes:
To provide a place where people with intellectual disabilities are nurtured and valued, a place where they will be engaged in all aspects of their lives, learning and working alongside lifelong friends, family and members of the community.
The Village Community is a non-profit organization, founded in 2013 by parents of adult children with intellectual disabilities, with the purpose of providing high quality, engaging experiences to our members so that they can continue to live happy, healthy, productive lives. We have a commitment to building relationships with members, member families, staff, and the broader community. As part of this mission, we serve as a partner with University of Iowa medical, nursing, and graduate school programs, providing on-site learning and practicum opportunities to students interested in working with this population in a professional capacity. We have been recognized as a thought leader and continue to provide consultation to stakeholders and community partners on our model of service provision that has significantly less overhead and administrative costs than other similar service providers. This has translated to low staff turnover and a more positive member experience. During the pandemic, we were the only local day program that continued offering regular programming to our members, recognizing that caregivers still needed to work and members needed the consistency and routine to protect their mental health. We were able to do so safely with extremely careful planning and protocols in place to prevent the transmission of the virus. For those members who were homebound, we delivered materials on a regular basis to keep them engaged and connected as a group weekly through Zoom. We utilize best practices for service provision as well as business management to ensure we are sustainable over the long term. In the midst of the pandemic, our commitment to long term financial sustainability couldn't be stronger. Grant funds and donations have helped mitigate our loss of income from significantly lower levels of service provision. Because we recognize that our staff are our most valuable asset, we remained committed to ensuring their full-time employment throughout the pandemic. Our reserve funds remain stable and available should they be needed to see us through the end of the pandemic or in the future if we experience significant, unexpected changes with Medicaid reimbursement rates as we have in the past.
