Organizations Filed Purposes:
The Iowa Women's Foundation is committed to improving the lives of Iowa's women and girls. We use research to uncover the biggest barriers to women's success as well as their greatest needs, and we invest our passion and resources accordingly.
The Building Community Child Care Solutions (BCCCS) collaborative is a network of 30 communities whose efforts are research based and community led. Under IWF oversight, more than 650 volunteer community stakeholders are working to promote childcare. Child care slots across Iowa increased by 3,308. The number of in-home providers increased in 35 communities across Iowa. Childcare centers opened in 7 communities and expanded in 4 others. Childcare training was provided to 157 individuals with 111 completing the training. Thirty-seven (37) have become registered in-home providers, 44 were awaiting approval, an additional 18 are still deciding next steps. Twelve (12) participants have gone to work for a childcare center. IWF was one of 9 women's funds across the country to launch a Women's Economic Mobility Hub in 2020 to grow and sustain the childcare sector. The current network of BCCCS aligned communities will increase by at least 10. Awareness of the social and economic impact the childcare crisis was shared through 18 presentations. Support for maintaining and growing the childcare workforce is being developed through 5 committees with volunteers from across the state. IWF worked with eleven other childcare advocacy organizations to secure 5 childcare bills passing the Iowa House and ensuring the issue is a priority for both parties.
Grantmaking continues to be at the heart of IWF's work. Grants made in 2020 included $100,000 of core grants, $40,000 directed to child care and $72,398 of subgrants related to Iowa's response to Covid19.
