ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE PROGRAMS: AS THE FIRST AND ONLY HUMANE SOCIETY IN COUNCIL BLUFFS AND POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, WE PROVIDE SHELTER, FOOD, VACCINES AND MEDICAL TREATMENTS TO THOUSANDS OF STRAY, UNWANTED OR ABANDONED ANIMALS EACH YEAR. THIS EXTENSIVE LEVEL OF CARE CULMINATES WITH SUCCESSFUL ADOPTIONS TO FAMILIES NEAR AND FAR. ADOPTION COUNSELORS ARE TRAINED TO LISTEN TO, AND IN RETURN, ASK POIGNANT QUESTIONS TO HELP MATCH ANIMALS INTO THEIR FOREVER HOMES AND ANSWER QUESTIONS POST ADOPTION.
ANIMAL BEHAVIOR TRAINING: BEHAVIOR PROBLEMS ARE THE NUMBER ONE REASON PEOPLE RELINQUISH THEIR PETS. AT THE SAME TIME, ADOPTING OUT AN ANIMAL EXHIBITING CERTAIN BEHAVIOR CHARACTERISTICS CAN BE A TRICKY FEAT. OUR ANIMAL BEHAVIORIST WORKS WITH A TEAM, MADE UP OF STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS, TO IDENTIFY CERTAIN PERSONALITY TRAITS, PARTICULARLY IN OUR DOGS. TOGETHER THEY FOCUS ON THE ANIMAL'S STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES TO COMPILE A PLAN TO HELP MITIGATE CERTAIN BEHAVIORS. THIS ALLOWS FOR THEIR TIME AT THE SHELTER TO BE FILLED WITH PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT, MAKING THE TRANSITION BACK INTO A HOME ENVIRONMENT AS QUICK AND SEAMLESS AS POSSIBLE.
PUBLIC EDUCATION, YOUTH PROGRAMS, AND VOLUNTEERISM: EDUCATIONAL AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ARE A CRITICAL COMPONENT OF OUR REGULAR ACTIVITIES. IN 2019, THERE WERE OVER 1,400 ADULTS/CHILDREN TOUCHED BY OUR EVENTS AND PROGRAMS AND NEARLY 1,000 YOUTH IMPACTED BY SPECIFIC EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS WITH STAFF, VOLUNTEERS AND ANIMALS. AS A HUMANE SOCIETY, WE AIM TO ENCOURAGE POSITIVE INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ANIMALS AND PEOPLE AND PROMOTE THE NEED FOR KINDNESS AND CARING TOWARDS ALL CREATURES. BECAUSE VOLUNTEERS PLAY SUCH A CRITICAL ROLE, OUR STAFF IS CURRENTLY UNDERGOING SERVICE ENTERPRISE INITIATIVE THROUGH THE POINTS OF LIGHT FOUNDATION TO COMPLETE A COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT, TRAINING, COACHING AND CERTIFICATION PROCESS. THIS IS A NATIONAL CHANGE MANAGEMENT PROGRAM THAT HELPS ORGANIZATIONS GAIN A GREATER RETURN ON VOLUNTEER INVESTMENT TO BETTER ACHIEVE OUR MISSION.TWO LARGE, PUBLIC DOG PARKS LOCATED ON-SITE ARE ACCESSIBLE BY MEMBERS FOR A NOMINAL YEARLY MEMBERSHIP. THIS AREA ALLOWS FOR DOGS AND THEIR OWNERS TO ENJOY TIME TOGETHER IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS.
