- HEALTHCARE SERVICES -IN FY20, PLANNED PARENTHOOD OF THE HEARTLAND, INC. (PPHEARTLAND) SERVED 27,539 PATIENTS IN 10 HEALTH CENTERS LOCATED IN IOWA AND NEBRASKA. OUR HEALTH CENTERS IN IOWA AND NEBRASKA PROVIDED ANNUAL EXAMS; BIRTH CONTROL; EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION; PREGNANCY TESTING AND OPTIONS COUNSELING; FERTILITY AWARENESS EDUCATION; BREAST/CHEST EXAMS AND MAMMOGRAPHY REFERRAL; TRANSGENDER HORMONE THERAPY; LGBTQ+ CARE; PEP FOR HIV PREVENTION AFTER EXPOSURE TO HIV; PREP FOR HIV PREVENTION; HIV TESTING, EDUCATION AND REFERRAL; SCREENING & TREATMENT FOR ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION; TESTING AND TREATMENT FOR STDS/STIS, UTIS, VAGINAL AND BLADDER INFECTIONS; (CONTINUED IN SCHEDULE O)HPV AND HEPATITIS B VACCINATIONS; AND REFERRALS FOR ADDITIONAL CARE. ABORTION CARE, COLPOSCOPY, LEEP, VASECTOMY AND MISCARRIAGE MANAGEMENT WERE OFFERED AT SELECTED SITES. SELECT SERVICES WERE OFFERED VIA TELEHEALTH. 31% OF CLIENTS RECEIVING CARE WERE AT OR BELOW 200% OF THE FEDERAL POVERTY LEVEL. PLANNED PARENTHOOD IS A WELL-KNOWN AND TRUSTED PROVIDER, CONSISTENTLY DELIVERING COMPASSIONATE CARE TO OUR CLIENTS IN A SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT. OUR HEALTH CENTERS SERVE AS A GATEWAY FOR OUR CLIENTS TO OTHER ESSENTIAL HEALTH CARE SERVICES AND MANY OF OUR CLIENTS REPORT THAT WE ARE THEIR PRIMARY SOURCE OF HEALTH CARE, PARTICULARLY IN RURAL AREAS. TO PROVIDE ACCESS FOR PATIENTS WHO OFTEN FACE BARRIERS TO SERVICE, PLANNED PARENTHOOD OFFERS WALK-IN APPOINTMENTS AND SAME DAY SCHEDULING, ONLINE APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING AND TEXT OR EMAIL APPOINTMENT REMINDERS, TELEHEALTH, A CENTRALIZED REFILL CENTER, AND A COMMITMENT TO PROVIDING INCLUSIVE CARE TO ALL CLIENTS.
- PUBLIC & PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION SERVICES -PPHEARTLAND PROVIDES AGE-APPROPRIATE, RESEARCH-INFORMED EDUCATION PROGRAMS IN REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH, HUMAN DEVELOPMENT AND SEXUALITY EDUCATION FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS IN A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY- AND SCHOOL-BASED SETTINGS. PPHEARTLAND EDUCATION PROGRAMS REACHED 23,118 YOUTH AND ADULTS ACROSS IOWA AND NEBRASKA DURING FY2020. FIFTY-SIX PERCENT OF ALL PRESENTATIONS OCCURRED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH K12 SCHOOLS. THE GOAL OF PPHEARTLAND'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS IS TO REDUCE THE HIGH INCIDENCE OF TEEN AND UNINTENDED PREGNANCIES AND STIS IN ITS AFFILIATE TERRITORY. PPHEARTLAND'S TRAINED EDUCATORS WORK IN COMMUNITIES THROUGH A BROAD BASE OF COLLABORATING AGENCIES TO PROVIDE MEDICALLY ACCURATE PREVENTION EDUCATION. (CONTINUED IN SCHEDULE O)EDUCATORS CONDUCT COMMUNITY OUTREACH AT HEALTH FAIRS AND COMMUNITY EVENTS, AND FACILITATE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING WITH YOUTH AND ADULTS. IN FY20, EDUCATORS FACILITATED 1,572 PRESENTATIONS AND TABLED AT 58 EVENTS. PROFESSIONAL TRAINING ON SEXUALITY EDUCATION AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE IS PROVIDED TO PROFESSIONALS AND EDUCATORS.
- PUBLIC AFFAIRS -PUBLIC AFFAIRS STAFF IN IOWA AND NEBRASKA ENGAGED VOLUNTEERS IN HUNDREDS OF HOURS OF OUTREACH, ADVOCACY AND ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES AT HEALTH CENTERS, ON COLLEGE CAMPUSES, AND IN THE COMMUNITY. ENGAGEMENT TACTICS MOVED FROM IN PERSON TO ONLINE AS THE PANDEMIC TOOK HOLD OF THE COUNTRY IN MARCH 2020.IN IOWA, PUBLIC AFFAIRS STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS EXECUTED AN OUTREACH PROGRAM TO INCREASE SUPPORT FOR AND PARTICIPATION IN THE LATINX COMMUNITY. THIS EFFORT INCLUDED TABLING AT EVENTS LIKE LATINO FESTIVAL IN DES MOINES. THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS STAFF REACHED OUT TO SUPPORTERS AND VOTERS ON NATIONAL VOTER REGISTRATION DAY (CONTINUED IN SCHEDULE O)AND IN THE LATINX COMMUNITY VIA THEIR RAIZ PROGRAM. IN NEBRASKA, STAFF CONDUCTED CIVIC ENGAGEMENT WORK IN THE COMMUNITY. WE WORKED WITH HEALTH CENTER STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND COMMUNITY BUSINESSES, ORGANIZATIONS, AND PARTNERS TO FOCUS ON CENSUS PARTICIPATION AND VOTER ENGAGEMENT. STAFF ALSO PARTICIPATED IN THE NEBRASKA CIVIC ENGAGEMENT TABLE TO WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH OVER 60 OTHER 501C3 ORGANIZATIONS WORKING TO EMPOWER THE DIVERSE AMERICAN ELECTORATE.IN THE FALL, IOWA ALSO EMPOWERED SEVERAL SPEAKERS BUREAU PROGRAM MEMBERS TO SHARE THEIR STORIES VIA A PROJECT THAT COLLECTED STORIES AND GENERATED VIDEOS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF SEXUAL AND REPORDUCTIVE HEALTH CARE. THESE STORIES ARE NOW ARCHIVED AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE USED IN OUR DIGITAL ORGANIZING ACTIVITES. STAFF IN IOWA AND NEBRASKA CONTINUE TO ENGAGE PATIENT STORYTELLERS THROUGH THE HEALTH CENTER ADVOCACY PROGRAM, BOTH THROUGH HEALTH CENTER ADVOCACY TABLES IN EIGHT HEALTH CENTERS IN IOWA AND TWO IN NEBRASKA THAT ALLOW PATIENTS TO SIGN UP TO PARTICIPATE IN VARIOUS ADVOCACY AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING AND THROUGH THE ACTUAL SPEAKERS BUREAU PROGRAM. ALL PROGRAMS SHIFTED INTO THE DIGITAL SPACE IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19.IN NEBRASKA, PUBLIC AFFAIRS STAFF PROVIDED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING TO OVER 100 SOCIAL WORK STUDENTS REGARDING THE JUDICIAL BYPASS PROCESS AND HOW MINORS ACCESS ABORTION SERVICES IN THE STATE. EDUCATIONAL EVENTS MOVED ONLINE ONCE THE PANDEMIC HIT. IN LINCOLN AND OMAHA, PUBLIC AFFAIRS STAFF TRAINED SUPPORTERS TO VOLUNTEER AS HEALTH CENTER PATIENT ESCORTS AT BOTH THE LINCOLN AND OMAHA HEALTH CENTERS. SUPPORTERS FILLED 176 VOLUNTEER SHIFTS AND CONTRUBUTED OVER 350 HOURS TO ESCORT PATIENTS AND ENSURE THEY COULD SAFELY ENTER AND LEAVE THE HEALTH CENTER.IOWA STAFF EMPOWERED AND SUPPORTED GENERATION ACTION STUDENT GROUPS COMPRISED OF 24 MEMBERS ON THREE ACTIVE CAMPUSES; ONE CAMPUS PAUSED PROGRAMMING DURING THE PANDEMIC. ENGAGEMENT AND OUTREACH CONTINUED ONLINE FOR MEMBERS ON THE OTHER TWO CAMPUSES.IN NEBRASKA, PUBLIC AFFAIRS STAFF CONNECTED MEMBERS OF THE SPEAKERS BUREAU TO HELP PROVIDE PROGRAMMING DURING THE ANNUAL GENERATIONS STRONG FUNDRAISING EVENT, HELPING TO STEWARD OVER 170 DONORS. STAFF IN IOWA AND NEBRASKA SPOKE REGULARLY WITH MEMEBERS OF THE PRESS/MEDIA ABOUT SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH SERVICES AND RIGHTS. IN IOWA, STAFF GAVE PRESS INTERVIEWS WITH STATE AND NATIONAL JOURNALISTS TO SHARE INFORMATION ABOUT THE TEMPORARY BAN ON ABORTION IN THE STATE THAT OCCURRED WHEN GOVERNOR REYNOLDS INDICATED THAT ABORTION IS NOT AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE DURING THE PANDEMIC. THE ORGANIZATION FILED A LAWSUIT IN RESPONSE AND WAS ABLE TO PROTECT ABORTION SERVICES MOVING FORWARD.
