TO MOBILIZE RESOURCES TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH AND WELL BEING OF THE VETERAN COMMUNITY.

ICVARF MOBILIZES RESOURCES THAT HELP TARGET, CURE, AND IMPROVE VETERANS' HEALTH PROBLEMS. BASED IN IOWA CITY, A HUB OF RESEARCH AND HEALTH CARE IN THE MIDWEST, WE SERVE VETERANS IN IOWA AND EASTERN ILLINOIS. ICVARF HELPS THE IOWA CITY VA HEALTH CARE SYSTEM ADVANCE ITS HEALTHCARE GOALS. ICVARF SUPPORTS MEDICAL RESEARCH PROJECTS LED BY VA STAFF IN ORDER TO ASSIST AND IMPROVE THE HEALTHCARE PROVIDED TO THE VETERAN COMMUNITY.FOR THE YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2019 THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED TO MANAGE TWO DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE (DOD) GRANTS AND SEVERAL INDUSTRY SPONSORED GRANTS. ONE DOD GRANT SUPPORTS RESEARCH FOR VETERANS WITH SEVERE HEARING LOSS THROUGH COCHLEAR IMPLANT TECHNOLOGY AND THE SECOND DOD GRANT FOCUSES ON TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY AS A RESULT OF MULTIPLE IMPACTS OR BLASTS. DURING 2018 THE FOUNDATION PARTNERED WITH THE VA INFECTION CONTROL PRACTICE-BASED RESEARCH NETWORK AND THE CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL IN THEIR EFFORTS TO EVALUATE INTERVENTION IN INFECTION CONTROL AND ANTIMICROBIAL STEWARDSHIP. THE STUDY INCLUDED FIFTEEN VA HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS WITH THE IOWA CITY VA HEALTH CARE SYSTEM COORDINATING THE RESEARCH ACTIVITIES OF THE FIFTEEN OTHER LOCATIONS. DURING 2019, THE FOUNDATION CONTINUED TO MANAGE THESE STUDIES. THE FOUNDATION HAS APPROXIMATELY 20 MEDICAL RESEARCH ACCOUNTS IN VARIOUS STAGES OF ACTIVITY AND EXPENDED APPROXIMATELY $746,749 TO SUPPORT MEDICAL RESEARCH ACTIVITIES.HOSPITALS, PHYSICIANS, AND OTHER HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS OFTEN FALL SHORT OF USING THE FINDINGS FROM RESEARCH STUDIES TO IMPROVE HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR VETERANS. WHILE RESEARCH STUDIES SHOW THAT THE VA DOES A BETTER JOB OF USING RESEARCH INFORMATION THAN PROVIDERS IN THE PRIVATE SECTOR, MORE CAN STILL BE DONE TO IMPROVE THE TRANSFER OF INFORMATION IS REFERRED TO AS "IMPLEMENTATION". THE CENTER FOR RESEARCH IN THE IMPLEMENTATION OF INNOVATIVE STRATEGIES IN PRACTICE (CRIISP) WAS ESTABLISHED IN JUNE 2004 AS A NEW VA HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT (HSR&D) CENTER OF EXCELLENCE FOCUSING ON IMPLEMENTATION OR TRANSFER OF INFORMATION.CRIISP'S GOAL IS TO CREATE WAYS TO CHANNEL RESEARCH INFORMATION TO CLINICIANS IN A MORE DIRECT FASHION IN ORDER TO IMPROVE VETERAN'S WELL BEING. SPECIFICALLY THE AIMS TO: 1. IDENTIFY EXISTING PROCESSES THAT ASSIST OR HINDER THE TRANSFER OF RESEARCH INFORMATION. 2. DEVELOP, TEST, AND DISTRIBUTE NEW PROCESSES THAT IMPROVE THE QUALITY AND COSTS OF MEDICAL SERVICES.
