Serving the religious, educational, and community needs of the Jewish students of the University of Iowa.
Shabbat dinner and Jewish holidays: One of the ways that Iowa Hillel serves as a home away from home for our students is through our weekly Shabbat dinners. Every Friday night, Iowa Hillel welcomes in students from the University of Iowa for Shabbat dinner after student led services. In a world that never stops, Shabbat is there to remind us to take time to rest, and for our stressed out, busy students rest is often overlooked. After services, all of the students gather around the Shabbat candles and welcome in the Sabbath before sitting down to a delicious home cooked meal. We sometimes serve more traditional Sephardic, Mizrachi, and Ashkenazi dishes and other times we serve student favorites like grilled cheese and tomato soup. Friday night Shabbat dinners, served out of our commercial kosher kitchen, is a longstanding tradition for our 50-70 students that join us weekly to connect with their Jewish community. Many students join us for Jewish holidays as well. From Rosh Hashanah to Passover and everything in between, we provide opportunities for gathering with their Hawkeye Hillel family.
Educational and Other Programs-It is pivotal to our mission to provide an opportunity and a welcoming space for each and every one of these students to explore their connection to Judaism in whatever way works for them and we strive to do just that in our programming. We have opportunities for Jewish learning and exploring life's big questions to allow our students to explore how Judaism can impact their everyday life in college. We also have opportunities for education through bringing in speakers to talk about various topics about Judaism or Israel. Additionally, we put on various social events including our every popular annual Iowa Hillel verues AEPi Bowling.
