To support educational programming at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Regents Resource Center and serve as a community resource for water quality, research and environmental education.
Scholarships: Student scholarships for students attending Iowa Lakeside Laboratory Regents Resource Center (ILLRRC) during the summer of 2020. Students receive scholarships designated to pay for room and board for each week that they are attending class at ILLRRC. In 2020, the scholarships were used to pay tuition for students taking classes virtually. Students were not allowed on campus.
Public programming: Water monitoring: Citizen Science: Water samples are collected by volunteers from 9 lakes in the Iowa Great Lakes watershed. The water sample analysis is completed by the State Hygienic Laboratory in the Bovbjerg Water Chemistry Lab at the ILLRRC in Milford, IA. The ILLRRC provides lab space for the State Hygienics Laboratory.
Grant issued to ILLRRC from Friends of Lakeside Lab, Inc for education programs directed by the Education co-ordinator for ILLRRC: 1. Environmental camps for youth during the summer season (June - August ). In 2020, youth were not allowed on campus so weekly Nature Packets were distributed. 2. Pre-K - 12 school groups attend day programs during the school year (September - May ) 3. Training for Pre-school teachers: Project based learning in Nature is emphasized in a nationally recognized teaching model designed by Nature Connections - a group of local citizens and board members. In 2020, the class was held virtually online. 4. Free public environmental programs: Weekly lectures during the summer months by faculty on site - did not happen in 2020 Weekly family presentations during the summer months Weekly radio spots called - Science Minute - teaching about various environmental issues. Social media highlighting activities at the ILLRRC. In 2020 video presentations were prepared several times each week. Memorandum of Understanding with Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation to complete water sample analysis for projects in the Iowa Great Lakes watershed.
