TO BE THE PREMIER PROVIDER OF DISPUTE RESOLUTION SERVICES TO CITIZENS OF IOWA AND THE MIDWEST.
EACH YEAR, IOWA MEDIATION SERVICE HANDLES FARMER-CREDITOR AND FARM NUISANCE MEDIATIONS UNDER IOWA CODE 654. WE ARE CERTIFIED BY THE USDA TO DEAL WITH FARM MEDIATION ISSUES. IN 2013, WE RECEIVED 301 MEDIATION REQUESTS FROM LENDERS AND OTHER INTERESTED PARTIES, PROCESSING THESE AND EITHER HOLDING MEDIATION SESSIONS OR ISSUING RELEASES FOR EACH CASE. THE AVERAGE CASE CONSISTS OF FIVE LOANS AND 3 BORROWERS. WE ALSO MAKE OURSELVES AVAILABLE TO ALL PARTIES IN MEDIATION WITH HELP PREPARING FOR THE PROCESS IF NEEDED.
AS PART OF A GROUP OF AGENCIES BROUGHT TOGETHER BY THE IOWA ATTORNEY GENERAL, IOWA MEDIATION SERVICE WORKS WITH HOME MORTGAGE LENDERS AND BORROWERS ON A VARIETY OF ISSUES, MOST NOTABLY MORTGAGE MODIFICATIONS AND FORECLOSURE FILINGS. AS PART OF THIS SERVICE, WE OPERATE THE IOWA MORTGAGE HELP HOTLINE, PROVIDING INTAKE SERVICES TO CLIENTS AND ASSIGNING CASES TO THE VARIOUS AGENCIES WHO ARE PART OF IOWA MORTGAGE HELP. THE HOTLINE AVERAGES 20 CALLS A DAY; ABOUT HALF OF THESE BECOME CASES. IN ADDITION TO MANAGING THE INTAKE PROCESS, IOWA MEDIATION SERVICE ALSO WORKS DIRECTLY WITH CLIENTS, NEGOTIATING MODIFICATIONS AND FORBEARANCES ON THEIR BEHALF. IMS HANDLES APPROXIMATELY 600 CASES PER YEAR.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE VISITING NURSES ASSOCIATION OF IOWA, IOWA MEDIATION SERVICE PROVIDES FAMILY TEAM MEETING SERVICES TO A WIDE VARIETY OF CLIENTS IN POLK COUNTY AND CENTRAL IOWA -- ALL CASES ARE INITIATED THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES. WHEN PARENTS ARE AT RISK OF LOSING CUSTODY OF MINOR CHILDREN DUE TO DRUG ABUSE, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, OR CRIMINAL CHARGES, IMS PROVIDES TRAINED FACILITATORS TO WORK WITH PARENTS, GUARDIANS, DHS, ATTORNEYS, AND OTHER CONCERNED WITH THE WELFARE OF THE CHILD OR CHILDREN IN QUESTION. AS PART OF THE PROCESS, IMS HELPS PARENTS DRAW UP AN ACTION PLAN, MONITORS THEIR PROGRESS, AND WORKS WITH ALL PARTIES CONCERNED TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND STABLE ENVIRONMENT THAT IS IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE MINOR CHILD, WHILE WHENEVER POSSIBLE WORKING TOWARDS THE GOAL OF UNITING AND STRENGTHENING FAMILIES.
