SUNRISE PROJECT SERVES DOUGLAS COUNTY BY PROVIDING SPACE AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND BACKGROUNDS TO BUILD AN EQUITABLE COMMUNITY THROUGH EDUCATION, GOOD FOOD, AND SOCIAL CONNECTION.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT: SUNRISE PROJECT DEVELOPED AND IMPLEMENTED A LEADERSHIP AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM THAT FOCUSES ON BUILDING LEADERSHIP SKILLS, DISCOVERING AND EXPLORING PASSIONS AND LEARNING ABOUT THE MANY WAYS TO BE INVOLVED IN THE LAWRENCE AND DOUGLAS COUNTY COMMUNITY. OUR EMPHASIS IS ENGAGING PEOPLE OF DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS AND PEOPLE WITH MARGINALIZED IDENTITIES.
Youth Education: Sunrise Project engaged with youth in elementary classrooms, at Sunrise Project, and at the local high schools. Youth in elementary classrooms engaged in cooking and growing activities that connected them to good food. Youth also attended on-site programs at Sunrise that centered on cooking and growing. High school and middle school youth engaged in social justice workshops on and off-site; cooked and gardened and learned civic engagement skills through various workshops and events.
