Organizations Filed Purposes: THE LAWRENCE HUMANE SOCIETY NURTURES THE HUMAN-ANIMAL BOND BY PROVIDING SHELTER, CARE, AND ADVOCACY TO HOMELESS AND ABUSED ANIMALS, AS WELL AS RESOURCES FOR THE PEOPLE AND PETS IN THE DOUGLAS COUNTY, KANSAS COMMUNITY.

SHELTER OPERATIONS: THE LAWRENCE HUMANE SOCIETY ACCEPTS AND PROVIDES TEMPORARY CARE FOR STRAY ANIMALS FOUND WITHIN THE CITY OF LAWRENCE, KS AND DOUGLAS COUNTY; ANIMALS SEIZED BY ANIMAL CONTROL; PETS RELINQUISHED BY THEIR OWNERS; AND ANIMALS TRANSFERRED FROM OTHER ANIMAL WELFARE AGENCIES LACKING TIME, SPACE, AND RESOURCES TO FIND POSITIVE PLACEMENT FOR THEIR ANIMALS. DURING THEIR STAY, ANIMALS RECEIVE DAILY ESSENTIAL FEEDING AND CLEANING, AND EXERCISE AND ENRICHMENT. THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT ON HOW LONG AN ANIMAL MAY STAY IN THE SHELTER'S CARE AND STAFF WORK TO FIND A POSITIVE OUTCOME FOR ALL ANIMALS THAT ARE FRIENDLY, HEALTHY, TREATABLE, AND REHABILITATABLE. OF THE 3,743 ANIMALS HOUSED AT THE SHELTER IN 2019, 577 ANIMALS WERE REUNITED WITH THEIR OWNERS, 2,747 ANIMALS WERE ADOPTED TO NEW HOMES, AND 45 ANIMALS WERE TRANSFERRED TO OTHER AGENCIES FOR PLACEMENT. WE ACHIEVED AN OVERALL LIVE RELEASE RATE OF 94.5% FOR 2019. IN 2019, THE LAWRENCE HUMANE SOCIETY COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION AND MOVED INTO A NEW 20,000 SQ. FT. BUILDING TO REPLACE THE OLD, WORN OUT FACILITY. THE NEW SHELTER, MADE POSSIBLE THROUGH GENEROUS DONATIONS FROM SUPPORTERS, HAS SIGNIFICANTLY IMPROVED DAILY SHELTER OPERATIONS. IT OFFERS LOWER-STRESS ANIMAL HOUSING WITH LESS RISK OF DISEASE SPREAD. THE NEW FACILITY WAS ALSO DESIGNED TO BE COMMUNITY-CENTRIC, WITH A MULTIPURPOSE MEETING ROOM FOR COMMUNITY USE, A PET RESOURCE CENTER TO PROVIDE AID TO PET OWNERS AND PREVENT PET SURRENDER, AND A VET CLINIC WITH INCREASED CAPACITY TO OFFER LOW COST PUBLIC VETERINARY SERVICES TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS STRUGGLING TO ACCESS CARE.

VETERINARY CARE: THE LAWRENCE HUMANE SOCIETY EMPLOYS TWO FULL-TIME VETERINARIANS TO EVALUATE AND TREAT ANIMALS IN OUR CARE, AS WELL AS MAKE ANIMALS ADOPTION-READY. IN 2019, 3,743 ANIMALS SHELTER ANIMALS WERE CARED FOR BY VETERINARY STAFF, WITH 1,837 SPAY AND NEUTER SURGERIES PERFORMED ON ANIMALS IN THE FACILITY. THE VETERINARY TEAM ALSO COMPLETED 62 DENTAL PROCEDURES AND 114 OTHER SPECIALTY MEDICAL PROCEDURES, INCLUDING AMPUTATIONS, MASS REMOVALS, WOUND REPAIR, ETC., FOR SHELTER ANIMALS. ADDITIONALLY, THE VETERINARY TEAM PERFORMED 329 SPAY AND NEUTER SURGERIES FOR THE PUBLIC, AND 90 COMMUNITY CATS WERE TRAPPED, NEUTERED, VACCINATED, AND RETURNED. AS A PART OF THE SHELTER'S SURRENDER PREVENTION PROGRAM, 52 ANIMALS RECEIVED EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE AND WERE REUNITED WITH THEIR OWNERS ONCE TREATED.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT: THE LAWRENCE HUMANE SOCIETY OFFERS A VARIETY OF PROGRAMS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COMMUNITY MEMBERS OF LAWRENCE, KS AND DOUGLAS COUNTY. THE SHELTER'S VOLUNTEER PROGRAM UTILIZES INDIVIDUALS AND CIVIC- MINDED GROUPS TO ASSIST WITH DAILY ANIMAL CARE AND ENRICHMENT, SANITATION, ADMINISTRATIVE TASKS, AND SUPPORT TO THE VETERINARY AND BEHAVIOR DEPARTMENTS. IN ADDITION TO HELPING WITH DAILY SHELTER OPERATIONS, VOLUNTEERS LEAD OUR COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS INCLUDING THE COMMUNITY CAT PROGRAM AND MASS STREET MUTTS. IN 2019, OVER 108 COMMUNITY CATS WERE TRAPPED, NEUTERED, AND VACCINATED, WITH 90 CATS RETURNED TO THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS AND 18 KITTENS SOCIALIZED AND ADOPTED. IN 2019, THE MASS STREET MUTTS PROGRAM SENT 143 SHELTER DOGS ON DAY OUTINGS IN THE COMMUNITY, BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS WITH INDIVIDUALS AND PET-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY BUSINESSES LOCALLY. THE LAWRENCE HUMANE SOCIETY ALSO HAS A FOSTER PROGRAM IN WHICH SHELTER PETS ARE GIVEN RESPITE FROM THE SHELTER BY VOLUNTEERS WHO OPEN THEIR HOMES TO PROVIDE TEMPORARY CARE. THE FOSTER PROGRAM ALSO EXTENDS TO ASSIST CLIENTS OF OTHER SOCIAL WELFARE PROGRAMS IN THE COMMUNITY. IN 2019, OVER 200 VOLUNTEERS HOUSED AND CARED FOR A TOTAL OF 882 ANIMALS, WITH THE LAWRENCE HUMANE SOCIETY PROVIDING FOOD, VETERINARY CARE, AND PET SUPPLIES FOR FOSTER PETS. OUTSIDE OF FOSTERING, IN 2019, 909 VOLUNTEERS GAVE 15,219 HOURS OF VOLUNTEER SUPPORT ON BEHALF OF THE LAWRENCE HUMANE SOCIETY'S MISSION TO HELP PETS AND THE COMMUNITY.
