Historic Wichita Cowtown,Inc.s purpose is to depict Wichita during the period of 1865 to 1880. The organization does so by collecting and perserving written records and artifacts and reproducing items from that era.
The museum maintains an extensive inventory of period costumes for use in demonstrations and various events.
The museum provides educational opportunities for the general public. This is accomplished through various events such as staged gunfights, period costumed volunteers that tell of life in Wichita between 1865 through 1880, vintage baseball games, and civil war re-enactors.
The museum maintains a collection of over 24,000 items dating back to the 19th century. Items include pieces for study and research, to be used in programs and events, and hands-on demonstrations. Each item is cataloged and preserved in accordance with current museum standards. These museum pieces are either displayed for the general public or stored in an appropriate storage facility. Items are cleaned and inspected on a regular basis.
