LIKE MANY NON-PROFITS, MTWICHITA'S 2020 FISCAL YEAR WAS SPENT FIGHTING FOR LONG-TERM FINANCIAL HEALTH IN THE MIDST OF THE BLOWS DEALT BY THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. IN SOME WAYS VERY FORTUNATE (SHUTDOWNS OCCURRED BEFORE CONTRACTS WERE OUT FOR OUR SUMMER SEASON, ETC.), THE STAFF HAVE FOUND WAYS TO PIVOT PROGRAMMING, IN AN ATTEMPT TO ENSURE WE DO NOT END UP WITH TWO YEARS OF EXPENSES BUT ONLY ONE YEAR OF INCOME. WE ARE VERY PROUD OF WHAT WE MANAGED DURING FY20, LISTED BELOW. IN DECEMBER 2019, MTWICHITA HAD A PATRON TOUR TO NYC, WITH 51 TRAVELERS AND NETTING $31,000. THIS TRIP ALSO SERVES TO CULTIVATE MAJOR DONORS. FOR EXAMPLE, ONE NEW $10,000 DONOR IN FY19 SPECIFICALLY CITED WHAT HE LEARNED ABOUT MTWICHITA ON THE NY TRIP AS HIS MOTIVATION FOR GIVING. IN FEBRUARY 2020, MTWICHITA PRODUCED A SUCCESSFUL SOLD-OUT CONCERT FROM ALUM AND HAMILTON STAR JULIUS THOMAS III. NET PROFIT ON THE CONCERT WAS $29,000. BY LATE MARCH, AMIDST SHUTDOWNS, MTWICHITA STARTED REGULAR FREE SOCIAL MEDIA ACTIVITIES, INCLUDING: MASTERCLASS MONDAYS (FEATURING BOTH PERFORMING AND TECHNICAL STAFF ALUMNI SHARING WHAT THEY KNOW ABOUT A TOPIC); WAYNE WEDNESDAYS (WHEREIN OUR PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR TAKES QUESTIONS AND SPEAKS ON FACEBOOK LIVE); AND FLASHBACK FRIDAYS (INCLUDING COMMENTARY AND CLIPS FROM A PAST PRODUCTION). IN MAY WE CREATED A MEMBERSHIP PROGRAM AND PLANNING A GREAT DEAL OF ONLINE CONTENT FOR THESE "SPOTLIGHT SOCIETY" MEMBERS, INCLUDING: A. 10 WEEKLY TCM-STYLE EPISODES OF WAYNE'S MOVIE CLUB, COMPLETE WITH BEFORE AND AFTER MOVIE COMMENTARY; B. TWO ALUMNI SOLO CONCERTS FILMED AT WICHITA'S ORPHEUM THEATRE AND BEING STREAMED FOR MEMBERS AND SINGLE TICKET BUYERS; C. A VIRTUAL VERSION OF OUR REGULAR STARNIGHT CABARET CONCERT (THIS YEAR FEATURING MEMBERS OF THE 2019 COMPANY); D. INTERVIEWS WITH OUR MUSICAL DIRECTOR, PIT MUSICIANS, AND STARS; E. ALL IN ALL BETWEEN THE SOCIAL MEDIA AND SPOTLIGHT CONTENT, WE CREATED ABOUT 30 HOURS OF DIGITAL CONTENT. ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR SPRING AND SUMMER INCLUDE:A. HOLDING OUR JESTER AWARDS CEREMONY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ONLINE, WITH VIEWERSHIP REACHING 2700 HOUSEHOLDS (2019 ATTENDANCE WAS 1442);B. RE-IMAGINING OUR ANNUAL CURTAIN UP! FUNDRAISER TO BE A STAY-AT-HOME EVENT, GROWING ATTENDANCE FROM 264 ATTENDEES IN 2019 TO 305 IN 2020;C. MORPHING OUR SUMMER HANDS-ON EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM, THE APPRENTICE PROGRAM, INTO A STAY-AT-HOME "APPRENTICE PROGRAM IN A BOX" ACTIVITY; D. CREATING TWO SOCIALLY DISTANCED TEEN CHOIR PERFORMANCES FOR ONLINE RELEASE; E. PLANNING AND FILMING CONTENT TO BE RELEASED IN 2020, INCLUDING: A MTWICHITA ONLINE ACADEMY. SEVERAL MULTI-WEEK ONLINE COURSES ARE PLANNED FOR LATE SUMMER AND FALL, INCLUDING ONE DIRECTED TOWARDS THEATRE TEACHERS (FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS), A MUSICAL THEATRE HISTORY TOPICS CLASS FROM OUR PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, AND SEVERAL DANCE AND AUDITION PREPARATION CLASSES FOR PERFORMERS. DANCE/MOVEMENT CLASSES FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, FILMED IN OCTOBER 2020 BUT TO BE RELEASED LATE NOVEMBER OR DECEMBER 2020; A HOLIDAY SPECIAL FOR AIRING ON OUR PUBLIC TELEVISION STATION.MTWICHITA ALSO INVESTED SIGNIFICANT TIME AND RESOURCES INTO "BEHIND THE SCENES" ACTIVITIES SUCH AS: MAKING MASKS EARLY IN THE PANDEMIC, BOTH DONATED (FOR COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS/FIRST RESPONDERS) AND FOR THE GENERAL PUBLIC (FREE BUT WITH A RECOMMENDED DONATION) BUILDING A NEW RENTALS WEBSITE AND OTHERWISE GIVING ATTENTION TO OUR RENTALS BUSINESS (PHOTOGRAPHING AND CATALOGING DROPS, DEVELOPING NEW INVENTORY SYSTEMS, CREATING INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEOS, ETC.) CLEANING UP AND PREPPING FOR MORE OVERHAUL OF OUR CRMAND OF COURSE, OUR YEAR WAS SPENT EXAMINING SEVERAL DIFFERENT SCENARIOS AS AMERICA'S PANDEMIC WORSENED, BUDGETING A VARIETY OF SCENARIOS FOR BOTH FY20 AND FY21, APPLYING FOR GRANTS AND GOVERNMENT FUNDING, REPURPOSING FY19 SPONSOR FUNDS WHERE POSSIBLE, AND MANAGING CASH FLOW.
