Organizations Filed Purposes: TO EMPOWER PEOPLE TO EXPLORE & EXPRESS THEIR VOICES THROUGH IMAGINATIVE LEARNING AND LITERARY ARTS

CHILDREN'S & FAMILY PROGRAMS - 3,900 PEOPLE PARTICIPATED IN PROGRAMS THAT ENCOURAGE FAMILIES TO LEARN TOGETHER OR CHILDREN TO BENEFIT FROM LEARNING NEW THINGS. THE YEAR-ROUND TUTORING PROGRAM FOR GRADES K-12 PROVIDED WEEKLY ONE-ON-ONE TUTORING SESSIONS FOR CHILDREN WHO NEED HELP WITH READING, WRITING, OR MATH. CHILDREN FOUND THAT LEARNING CAN BE FUN IN EDUCATIONAL CLASSES INVOLVING READING, WRITING, MATH, AND OTHER TOPICS, AND SEMINARSHELPED FAMILIES FEEL BETTER-PREPARED TO HELP THEIR CHILDREN WITH ONLINE LEARNING DURING THE PANDEMIC. CAMP CARNEGIE'S HALF-DAY SUMMER CAMPS PROVIDED HIGH QUALITY, ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES IN A FUN, FAST-PACED ENVIRONMENT. FAMILY FUN AND LEARNING NIGHTS OFFERED FREE DINNER AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES THAT THE ENTIRE FAMILY COULD ENJOY, ALL BASED AROUND A CENTRAL THEME. THE CARNEGIE CENTER PROVIDED OUTREACH PROGRAMS IN LOCAL SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY CENTERS, WHICH OFTEN INCLUDED FREE BOOKS AND CONNECTING CHILDREN WITH PUBLISHED AUTHORS. A PARTNERSHIP WITH BAPTIST HEALTH LEXINGTON ENABLED US TO GIVE "BOOKS FOR BABIES" BORN AT THE HOSPITAL. THROUGH OUR OUTREACH EFFORTS, PROGRAMS IN OUR BUILDING, AND DISTRIBUTING BOOKS TO LITTLE FREE LIBRARIES, WE GAVE AWAY 5,000 FREE BOOKS TO CHILDREN AND ADULTS. COLLEGE MENTORING HELPED HIGH SCHOOL UPPER CLASSMAN PREPARE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS AND SEEK FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE OR SCHOLARSHIPS. DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, CARNEGIE SHIFTED TO ONLINE-ONLY PROGRAMMING (I.E., TUTORING, VIDEOS AND MAILED ACTIVITY KITS IN PLACE OF AUTHOR VISITS AND FAMILY LITERACY NIGHTS, FREE BOOK DISTRIBUTIONS)AT NO ADDITIONAL COST. OF THE OVERALL CHILDREN'S AND FAMILY PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS, 75% CAME FROM LOW INCOME HOMES, AND 70% ARE PEOPLE OF COLOR. A MAJORITY OF PROGRAM EXPENSES WERE FUNDED BY GRANTS AND COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTIONS, AS NEARLY ALL OF THE CHILDREN'S AND FAMILY PROGRAMS WERE OFFERED AT NO COST. FOR THOSE PROGRAMS WITH A MINIMAL FEE, SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AVAILABLE FOR ALL CHILDREN FROM LOW INCOME FAMILIES.

ADULT CLASSES - EACH SEASON, WE OFFERED A NEW LINE-UP OF CLASSES IN WRITING, WORLD LANGUAGES, BUSINESS TOPICS, AND OTHERS. WE OFFERED ONE-ON-ONE WRITER MENTORING YEAR-ROUND FOR THE INDIVIDUAL HOPING TO SOMEDAY BE PUBLISHED, AS WELL AS THE PERSON NEEDING TO PREPARE BUSINESS-RELATED TEXT OR DEMONSTRATE BETTER WRITING SKILLS ON THE JOB. WE OFFERED ADULT LITERACY MENTORING FOR INDIVIDUALS PLANNING TO TAKE THE G.E.D. TEST OR WHO NEEDED HELP WITH BASIC LITERACY SKILLS. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR TOPICS INCLUDED BUSINESS WRITING. SOME CLASSES TOOK PLACE IN OUTREACH LOCATIONS, INCLUDING LIBRARY BRANCHES, A GROCERY'S COMMUNITY ROOM, LOCAL COMMUNITY CENTERS, SOCIAL SERVICES SITES, AND THE SENIOR CITIZENS CENTER. ONCE OUR BUILDING CLOSED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, WE MOVED OUR CLASSES AND OTHER OFFERINGS ONLINE USING ZOOM. OUR ANNUAL WRITING CONFERENCE WAS ALSO VIRTUAL AND FEATURED A NATIONAL SPEAKER ON PUBLISHING TOPICS AS WELL AS NEW YORK LITERARY AGENTS AND AN AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR. THE CARNEGIE CENTER AUTHOR ACADEMY PROVIDED ONE-ON-ONE MENTORING, SPECIAL WORKSHOPS, AND OTHER SUPPORT OVER A 9-MONTH PERIOD. WE SERVED 3,000 ADULTS IN THESE PROGRAMS. A MAJORITY OF REVENUE CAME FROM GRANT FUNDS AND CONTRIBUTIONS SO THAT WE COULD HIRE QUALIFIED INSTRUCTORS WHILE MAINTAINING AFFORDABLE FEES. SCHOLARSHIP RATES WERE GIVEN TO EVERY PERSON IN NEED.

ARTS ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS - THE CORNERSTONE OF THE CENTER'S ARTS ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS WERE LITERARY ART PROGRAMS, AND WE PROMOTED KENTUCKY WRITERS THROUGH ALL THAT WE DID. CARNEGIE REGUARLY OFFERED KENTUCKY GREAT WRITERS SERIES AND OTHER LITERARY READINGS IN THE BUILDING UNTIL THE PANDEMIC HIT, THEN OFFERED AUTHOR READINGS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS TO ONLINE VIDEOS, AVAILABLE ON CARNEGIE'S FACEBOOK PAGE AND YOUTUBE CHANNEL. THIS YEAR, WE INDUCTED SENA JETER NASLUND AND FOUR DECEASED WRITERS INTO THE KENTUCKY WRITERS HALL OF FAME, AND RECOGNIZED LARKSPUR PRESS' GREY ZEITZ WITH THE KENTUCKY LITERARY IMPACT AWARD DURING A CEREMONY AT THE KENTUCKY THEATRE. WE HELPED EMERGING WRITERS BECOME NOTICED THROUGH WRITING CONTESTS IN A VARIETY OF FORMS AND GENRES. THE CENTER WAS THE HOME SITE FOR THE KENTUCKY WOMEN WRITERS CONFERENCE AND WAS USED FOR BOOK LAUNCHES BY LOCAL AUTHORS AND PUBLISHERS, INCLUDING KENTUCKY HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE GURNEY NORMAN'S LATEST BOOK AND AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR KIMMERY MARTIN. MANY ART PROGRAMS WERE FAMILY-FRIENDLY AND SOME SPECIFICALLY TARGETED CHILDREN, SUCH AS OUR YOUTH MEETING AUTHORS PROGRAM. BEFORE THE PANDEMIC HIT, THE CENTER ALSO PARTICIPATED IN TWO LOCAL DOWNTOWN GALLERY HOPS TO PROMOTE VISUAL ARTS, AND INCORPORATED VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS INTO OTHER PROGRAMS, LIKE CARNEGIE CLASSICS. LAST YEAR, FREE ART ADMISSION WAS PROVIDED TO 7,000 PEOPLE, THANKS TO SUPPORT FROM GRANT FUNDS AND CONTRIBUTIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY.
