ASIA INSTITUTE-CRANE HOUSE, IS A COMMUNITY RESOURCE THAT PROMOTES UNDERSTANDING OF ASIAN CULTURES AND HERITAGE THROUGH EDUCATION,OUTREACH AND THE ARTS.
Teach in Asia (TIA)-- The Teach in Asia Program (TIA) was not run the summer of 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and due to State Lock Down Mandates. TIA was run in July 2019, which is included in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, but the July 2020 program, which would have occurred during the fiscal year ending June 30, 2021, was canceled. AICH established the TIA program in 1988 to send qualified American teachers to Asia to conduct three-week summer training programs in conversational English and to introduce American culture to teachers in Asia. In 1988, the program sent 10 teachers to Fujian province in China, and in 1999, sent its first teacher to Hanoi, Vietnam. Crane House has sent over 500 teachers to Asia for this program. Today, AICH partners with Louisvilles sister city, Jiujiang, and FAST (Fujian Academy of Science and Technology) to send 12 teachers annually to Asia to teach English to 325 Chinese students and 22 Chinese teachers and teachers aids. Recruitment of American teachers occurs in October. Training commences monthly from January to June. The program takes place for 3 weeks, plus a one week immersion trip, all in the month of July.
Explore ASIA our cultural educational arm of Asia Institute Crane House (AICH), presents a broad array of Asian cultural arts to the public in partnership with Asian artists from the community. Programs are presented in schools, community centers, libraries, and at our facility Crane House. These include Chinese and Japanese calligraphy, Indian Rangoli sand painting and fabric printing, paper cutting, tea ceremonies, dance and tai chi. Larger events include WorldFest, and St. James Art Fair (where we sponsor and showcase Asian art from a local Asian artist. Each of these activities is designed to engage the audience in learning about Asian culture and heighten their awareness of the diversity of cultures in Kentuckiana and the importance of understanding our global community. AICH also brings the community together through community dialogue (lectures and talks) for discussions on critical issues relevant to Asia today and to exchange information and develop cooperation among Louisvilles diverse Asian communities. Finally, AICH presents exhibits by Asian artists that focus on diverse art forms, including ceramics, textiles and clothing, photography, oral history, installation art, and culinary arts. The Explore Asia program was halted in late March of 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and due to state lock down mandates.
Summer Mandarin Language Program (SMLP) - The 2020 SMLP program, which would have been included in the fiscal year ending June 30, 2020, was canceled due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and due to state lock down mandates. AICH has hosted our SMLP for over 11 years. Currently, this program is co-sponsored with the help of the Confucius Institute of Western Kentucky. AICH fills the gap where our local educational systems lack offerings of Asian language education. Only one Jefferson County Public School offers Asian languages (Field Elementary and that is for elementary school students). AICHs SMLP is a three week intensive immersion program for emerging middle school and high school students teaching Chinese language, culture, and arts. All classes are taught by native Chinese Mandarin speakers (who all return to China at the end of our program in early July). The program includes intensive language classes, field trips to locations that feature Asian work, workshops that concentrate on Chinese history and culture, and classes that focus on Chinese art (Chinese fan dancing, tai chi, Chinese singing). The program concludes with a graduation presentation where students showcase what they have learned as well as sharing a big Chinese Banquet with staff, students and their family.
