ENRICHES AND ENGAGES OUR COMMUNITY WITH OPERA AND ARTS PROGRAMMING.
KENTUCKY OPERA PRODUCED THREE OPERAS (THE FOURTH SCHEDULED OPERA WAS CANCELLED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC), WITH SIX PERFORMANCES SERVING 6,752 ATTENDEES. EACH OPERA WAS FRAMED WITH PRECEDING AND CONCURRENT PROGRAMMING, AWAKENINGS, THAT GAVE CURRENT CONTEXT TO EACH OPERA. PARTNERING WITH OVER 90 NON-PROFIT GROUPS THROUGHOUT THE COMMONWEALTH IN FY20, AWAKENINGS IS A SERIES OF ARTS-CENTERED COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS THAT CHALLENGE TRADITION, QUESTION SOCIAL NARRATIVES, AND INVITE VARIED PERSPECTIVES AROUND WORKS PRODUCED ON THE MAINSTAGE. AWAKENINGS SERVED OVER 830 INDIVIDUALS IN ITS FIRST YEAR. PRE-PERFORMANCE TALKS SERVED 516 INDIVIDUALS.
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE A SCHOOL OPERA TOUR OF "CINDERELLA IN ESPANA", A SPANISH/ENGLISH BI-LINGUAL OPERA FOR YOUTH, REACHING OVER 15,000 STUDENTS, OVER 50% IN TITLE I SCHOOLS. THE YOUTH OPERA PROJECT, AN AFTER-SCHOOL MUSIC THEATRE PROGRAM FOR AGES 8-18, HAD 45 STUDENTS REGISTERED FOR OVER 160 CONTACT HOURS OF CLASSES, REHEARSALS, AND PREPARATION FOR CARMEN AND ROBIN HOOD PERFORMANCES. THE OVERTURE PROGRAM PROVIDES MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATIVE EXPRESSION, WITH AN INTRODUCTION TO THE BACKSTAGE MAGIC OF THE THEATRE AND VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS IN THEATRE AND THE ARTS. THE MUSIC, THEATRE, AND LITERACY PROGRAM BRAVO TIME SERVED OVER 1,000 CHILDREN AGES 3-8 WITH ITS CLASSROOM BASED PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM WAS ADAPTED TO ONLINE VIDEO TO CONTINUE TO SERVE STUDENTS DURING THE PANDEMIC.
KENTUCKY OPERA PRODUCES PROGRAMS AND PERFORMANCES DESIGNED TO INSPIRE AND ENGAGE BROAD AND DIVERSE AUDIENCES THROUGHOUT THE COMMONWEALTH WITH COMPELLING THEATRE, MUSIC, AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATIVE EXPRESSION AND LEARNING. ALL PROGRAMS ARE DELIBERATELY CREATED AND IMPLEMENTED TO REFLECT, CELEBRATE, AND SERVE THE DIVERSITY REPRESENTED IN THE COMMONWEALTH AND LOCALLY IN LOUISVILLE. ACTIVITIES OF KENTUCKY OPERA ARE DEVOTED TO ADDRESSING THE HISTORICAL BARRIERS AND INEQUITIES OF OUR ART FORM. SCHOOL AND YOUTH PROGRAMMING AND THE SANDFORD STUDIO ARTIST PROGRAM SPECIFICALLY SEEK TO BUILD DIVERSE REPRESENTATION IN THE OPERA INDUSTRY FOR YEARS TO COME.
