Organizations Filed Purposes: TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS THAT DEVELOP AND SUPPORT YOUTH IN OVERCOMING BARRIERS TO ACHIEVEMENT. THIS MISSION IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AND COLLEGE READINESS PROGRAMS. THE SIGNATURE PROGRAM IS THE WHITNEY M. YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM WHICH SERVES APPROXIMATELY 400 STUDENTS. OTHER PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE MATH & SCIENCE PROGRAM, PROJECT BUILD, AND THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP FUND.

TO PROVIDE EDUCATIONAL ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS THAT DEVELOP AND SUPPORT YOUTH IN OVERCOMING BARRIERS TO ACHIEVEMENT.

THE WHITNEY M. YOUNG SCHOLARS PROGRAM IS A COLLEGE READINESS PROGRAM FOR PROMISING YOUTH FROM UNDER-RESOURCED COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE LOUISVILLE AREA. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES SCHOLARS AN ALTERNATIVE PATH, RAISING THEIR SIGHTS AND FOSTERING THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW GENERATION OF THOUGHT-LEADERS, CHANGE MAKERS AND TRAILBLAZERS. STUDENTS COMMIT TO PARTICIPATE IN EXPERIENTIAL SATURDAY MORNING AND SUMMER PROGRAMS THAT PREPARE THEM ACADEMICALLY, SOCIALLY AND EMOTIONALLY FOR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION AND THE RIGORS OF COLLEGE. ELIGIBLE STUDENTS MUST HAVE A MINIMUM GRADE POINT AVERAGE OF 3.0 AND QUALIFY FOR FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH. APPROXIMATELY 450 STUDENTS ARE SERVED BY THIS PROGRAM ANNUALLY.

THE MATH & SCIENCE SUMMER PROGRAM HELD AT THE UOFL COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES ENGAGES HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN A REAL WORLD LABORATORY SETTING. APPROXIMATELY 100 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN GRADES 9-12 GATHER INFORMATION, CONDUCT SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATIONS, SOLVE PROBLEMS, DESIGN PROJECTS, AND PRESENT SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS. THE PROGRAM UTILIZES STEM (SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, AND MATHEMATICS) TEACHING STRATEGIES TO HELP STUDENTS RESEARCH THREE FOCUS AREAS OF BIODIVERSITY, WATER QUALITY, AND ENERGY. PROGRAM PARTNERS INCLUDE JEFFERSON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS, UOFL COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES, UPS, GE, AND LG&E AND KU ENERGY LLC.
