We believe there should be no barriers to accessing the world of classical music. Learning an instrument develops critical, creative thinkers who can set and accomplish their own goals- lifelong skills that can be used to achieve dreams in any field. The joy of music and the benefits of learning an instrument should be available to any student who is willing and devoted, no matter their socio-economic status. Music belongs to everyone.
The Louisville Academy of Music provides an inclusive community that nurtures the growth and development of students, not solely as musicians, but as creative, inspired people.
2020 was a year of resilience and innovation for the Louisville Academy of Music. It reinforced the importance and the power of music, especially during trying times. We expanded our student reach from 31 to 44 zip codes and taught ages 5-73 in weekly private instrument lessons. We embraced the online lesson, retaining most of our students and attracting new ones throughout the pandemic. We took advantage of remote learning and hosted online workshops with guests from all around the country, launched a Summer Symposium, and started the LAM radio hour on local community radio station ArtxFM.
In the fall of 2020 we enrolled our inaugural class of scholarship students. These students were recommended by their school teachers for having talent and dedication, but they would not have been able to afford music lessons without a scholarship. We currently have 10 students receiving full scholarships enrolled in violin, guitar, cello, voice, trumpet, and piano lessons. Our scholarship program has been fully funded by donors.
